The Importance of Spaying and Neutering

It is readily apparent at this time in our society that not enough spaying and neutering is being done. Every day hundreds to thousands of healthy cats and dogs are "euthanized" in so-called animal shelters due to lack of homes, space or time. There is a relatively small percentage of people (mostly women) who work tirelessly and give of themselves, their time and their hearts to helping these "homeless" 4-legged souls make it out of these death row facilities alive. Some are fortunate and find their way to new homes and some are very sadly put to death in many not-so-humane ways. Some, especially in more rural parts of the country (US in particular), are put do death in barbaric gas chambers, a horrifying process, painful, cruel and unnecessary. Others are given what is called heartstick which is also very painful, cruel and unnecessary. Some animals cry out in pain while being "murdered" by heartstick, yet the practice goes on. The animals who find their way to these uncaring, cold, evil facilities are terrified, scared and well aware of their fate should not an angel come to rescue them. As a "crossposter", one who crossposts information to "friends" and "acquaintences" on Facebook and other social media to help find these animals a safe place to live, it is hard not to feel the emotional pain of the situation just by looking at the sad photos of those destined for life or more often than not -- death. It is a difficult job due to the fact that your mind is constantly being baraged with photos of those about to be put to death. When cats and dogs become pregnant, they usually have "litters" of several offspring at one time. In order to reduce the number of homeless animals ending up in "kill facilities", we need to promote the fact that spaying and neutering saves lives. Anyone who has any kind of positive feelings towards a living, breathing 4-legged soul needs to promote this idea to its fullest. These unnecessary, cruel and barbaric deaths must end. Why preach nonviolence in the world when right at home we are intentionally murdering defenseless creatures who have no voice to protest their innocence. It is an atrocity of our day and a discredit to human nature to love and have compassion for all living things. If you are reading this and have the compassion to do something to help, please take action. For me it is a daily heartbreak to know that so many loving animals are put to death at the hands of uncaring facility workers just because they do not take the time to find homes for the homeless. This can be minimized or abolished if only we can get everyone to do their part by spaying and neutering before it is too late.

I agree with you that it's important to spay and neuter our pets, very important. I don't think this is the only problem though either. I also feel that BREEDING should be ILLEGAL! A BIG part of the problem where I live is there are tons of breeders who keep bringing more and more animals into this world. All they care about is the money from selling these poor animals so they don't care that half of them at least will end up being killed!! It ticks me off whenever I see a breeder who keeps bringing more animals into this world. Breeders should be STOPPED, it should not be legal to keep bringing pets into the world, as most of them will end up in a shelter...

I definitely agree with you that breeding needs to stop. There should not be an incentive for people to make money by breeding. There are lots of so-called pure breds that end up in shelters and are subject to losing their lives senselessly. Many people have a negative feeling towards pit bulls, thinking that they are vicious dogs. I do not subscribe to this idea as any domestic animal can become aggressive if it is mistreated, abused, etc. It is "man" who molds the personalities of any animal, especially dogs, to either be loving or be aggressive. Recently, I have heard talk in my county of requiring all pit bulls to be spayed and neutered. While I wholeheartedly agree with this concept, I feel the fines they are proposing are exorbitant and should be in a more reasonable range. Conversely, I would guess that due to man's nature of being nonconformal, if the punishment for not complying is not great enough, people will try to get away with the noncompliance. To conclude, the problem remains that far too many animals are ending up in so-called shelter facilities where there lives are in constant danger of being taken away. Any and all reasonable tactics to stop these senseless murders needs to be considered including that mentioned in your post.

I agree. All my critters are fixed and, as I tell people, if they cross my yard too many times I fix them too. I've had over 50 animals cross my door step and they have all are now without something.

Good for you Elic. A rationale and sane person responding with a positive answer and who understands the point of my post. I appreciate the humor too. Somehow animals know which houses to go to that are animal friendly. They have a keen understanding of things we humans sometimes do not understand. If everyone did their part, we would not have these horrible problems with the shelters that we do. God bless you for caring about these innocent ones.

I do mean that too, I have trapped a couple of feral cats and gotten them fixed. A cat that came visiting one too many times, went "home" fixed and the next time I saw him, he had a collar!
