In many instiutites there is a system of taking surprise tests. Many times the students who are well prepared can perform well but on the other end even more intelligent students who deserve better results fail to do well.
What do you think about these surprise tests? Are they really good for the students or they are additional burden for the students?

Surprise test is good , so here the teacher will be able to evaluate whether the student really was able to understand and internalize the lesson. This is also a way of evaluating whether the students are studying lessons or not . Surprise test measures student's preparedness in coming to class.

What Angelpink had said is truly right. Thus, encountering a surprise test is a teacher's way to measure student's preparedness.

The teachers at our school seldom give surprise tests, but they do tell us to always be prepared. When they give a surprise test, it is usually just a few items long, and it doesn't have a major effect on the grade. Usually our teachers would tell us when we have test. We have teachers who schedule the tests, and we have teachers who give us quizzes every meeting. When I was in high school we had teachers who joked about surprise tests. They would say, "Please study, because there will be a surprise test." My classmates found that very amusing.

It is basically the job of the teacher to keep their students ready for the tests. They know quite well that some students do not prepare unless there is test in the class. More over sometimes the course is too lengthy and so continuous preparation is required.
It is equally true that if regular preparation is done then one can avoid last minute tension about the tests.
Have a nice time friend...!

I think there nothing wrong with it, remember it is a "TEST", teacher were able to know if a student is always prepared, sometimes we take advantage on schedule test, we only study if the test is getting near. Preparedness is good for us, not only in school but also outside the school we must be prepared on all things. For we know that there are some event that comes in our life unexpectedly. Prepared help us to right away handle and cope up things even it is a worst thing or event.

While I agree with you that we should be prepared for any situation in life, I do not feel like agreeing with you entirely that the surprise tests are good always. I think that it depends on the types of the tests, means the type of questions to be asked in the test is also very important thing.
If the test is for long questions and theory based test, then the students must be told in advance because such tests need special preparation. And if the questions are just objective type questions based on the concept of the subject then they are good.
Thanks for adding to the discussion friend... Have a nice time.

I think these surprise test are good idea. They are simply test as future real life, at future work or future situations in adult life. They are tests as a training to questions and goals to adult life, where you will be able to take solutions to the problems that they will come without notice.

i hate when teachers do that but i guess they just do it to see how much you know so far , i guess that helps the teachers know where your level of education is at.

When I was a student we sometimes got surprice tests and I didn't like them much. We had many classes and lots of homework because I had chosen a school where we had to finish every subject in 2 years instead of 3 years like the other students did. During the week I didn't have time to read everything carefully and write notes for each subject. I postponed that and decided to do it just before the exams when there were no classes, so when we got a surprice test I wasn't ready for it and I didn't do very well. Unfortunately our Danish teacher loved surprice tests so we got quite a lot of them.

They are probably an additional burden to most kids. However, I have to say when I was in school I usually did better on a surprise test then a plan test. I would study for a test but would get so nervous while taking it all the information in my head would go out the window. However, on surprise test I didn't have time to get nervous and I would do so much better on them. Strange!

hi there,
for me, either of the two will do. being a student, you must always be prepared in all instances. since, it is the main duty of a student to learn and review his/her school lessons. so it is not a big deal whether a surprise test will be given or not. and either it is good or not, students should know their responsibilities.

I tend to agree with surprise tests as they encourage students to study on an ongoing basis. Studying only some weeks before the exams is not recommended. You just tend to cram data in your head, and fail to do much else. Tension increases, and many people could do much better in exams if they studied regularly during the year.

It is good practice to be always prepared. This surprise test teaches the student to be prepared all the time. It also teaches them to be diligent and read their lessons even if there is no expected exams. You will see who the lazy students are after the surprise exams.

Hi deserve40! I basically like surprise tests. When I was still studying I know some students who cheat the system in a way that they get to know what will be on the test paper by asking the class that took the exam before us. Some also makes cheat sheet. Surprise tests are a fun way of knowing student's knowledge about a certain subject further. Have a nice day!

Surprise tests are great. They keep students on their toes. If you know you have a big test coming up you may study really, really hard. You will be stressed and could burn out on studying. Lots of people don't perform well if they are stressing about a big exam. It is much better to be relaxed when taking a test. Plus you get it over with, with little stress. I used to memorize what I needed to know for a test then as soon as the test was over I would forget it. Surprise tests make it so that you have to know the subject, not just memorize items for a bit.

apparently , taking surprise test is a great measure to exam how attentively he pay on class or how frequently he revise after class. however without this advantage we just found from this kind of test ,what else could we absorb? in my mind , i think it is useless to other things except making more pressure on body of hardworking students. they are delicated to figure out every words spoken by their tutors ,even a simple action, by which the teacher want to convey to them .
whereas what could our student would gain after a drastic war , a surprise test ,that sound a little bit cruel for our students. in comparision with taking a surprise test to make student get anxious , releasing their pressure and to be taken over by their hobby may work out this problem effectively .
