Yeah, you may use lenses or large spectacles equipped with special lenses, protective rims etc to prevent any tears whenever cutting onion ! sure working 100 percent !

There a 5 tips to cut an onion without crying or less crying.....
1.Use a sharp knife:A sharp knife will cause less damage to cell walls and fewer irritants will be released.
2. Keep the exposed cuts away from you:As soon as you cut an onion in half, turn both halves down on your cutting board
3.Cut the onion properly:Chefs have an efficient way of dicing onions which conveniently keeps the most of the exposed cuts against the board.
4.Chill the onions:With a cold onion, less propanethial S-oxide will evaporate. You'll still get some irritants, but this will help
5.Run the vent hood:Position your cutting board next to the stove and turn on the exhaust fan. Irritants will be pulled away from you and your eyes.

I cut them under water if they are too strong. But sometimes I don`t want to have them with water (as when I want to fry them). Then I cut them placing my face aside and cutting them on a board.

Though the tears from the eyes during cutting onions are one of the best ways to cleanse them. still, I too follow your way. I mean, I keep the onions to be sliced under the faucet while cutting.
Another method that I occasionally try out (when there is no tap around) is slice or chop the onions when immersed in a bowl of water.

Mmmm, that is the fault, while cutting onions, be sure that the fan is off or the area is slightly calm. Air curculation helps to fly around the particles and it will easily get into our eyes etc.

I think cutting under water, use contact lenses [Since you use it occasionally] etc are better methods for you to avoid more tears while cutting onions. Following link has so many methods.

I also find it is difficult to cut the onions because I also cry for it. It is so uncomfortable. Later I wear a pair of goggles to cut the onions. And it is nice. At least I don't have to shed tears when I am cutting the onions. It is a very convenient way.

One time, I'm amazed that a purple onion did not make me cry and I'm almost finish chopping it but most of the time it irritates the eyes. Some even irritates the nose because it's so strong.

oh yes, it is really normal that tears will fall in your eyes when cutting an onion, unless we will find a good technique how to evade this crying. i saw once in a noontime show in the philippines a contest of not crying while slicing onions. if a contender can do this, he/she will win the in the contest. the contestants cut the same number of onions until two of them were left. the girl won because she was too witty to semi-close his eyes. i guess the hair of her eyelids prevent the juices of the onions to evaporate in her eyes. she did it with a smile in her face from the start of the game until she won at the end.
i want to share this link to know why it happened like that :) http://chemistry.about.com/od/chemistryfaqs/f/onionscry.htm

Running water helps when cutting onions, but it is not a cure. I once heard that if you just cut the top of the onion and start slicing (but leave the root intact), that helps, and it did really help, but not that much more. However, it is the best solution I've encountered.

hi there,
honestly, i also experienced what you have had. and as they say, people cries because of onion has some health deficiency. perhaps, a lack in vitamin c or something. with me here, i do lack in vitamin c that is why i got colds so often. and after inhaling the odor of the onion, my colds are gone as this also serve as my treatment.

Yes, onion are good enough. when I have cold I just cut an onion and I keep it in the room, onion will take all bacterial and microbs of our cold... after few hours I throw that onion and I cut another onion...

Hi. I usually follow this method and my eyes do not water. Cut the onions into two and put them in a bowl of water for about 3 to 5 minutes. While taking them out make sure to rub the cut sides with your fingers so that the juice does not affect your eyes. Peeling the skin awaywould also be easy if this is followed.

washing onion before cutting is a good way, but will not stop our tears... for that it is better to stand near the running water or in front of fan.. :)

Crying is inevitable when you're slicing onions. But there's a way to lessen it. Put a generous amount of rock salt beside you as you cut the onions. Also, if your eyes start to sting, wash with water or cool your eyes with a wet towel. Avoid putting your hand or fingers directly on your eyes. This way you won't accidentally put onion juices in your eyes. Hope these suggestions will help you the next time you cut some onions.

Put saran wrap around your eyes and if you want to improve the look (guests are over etc) you can fashion a mask with tinfoil around the edges. If you don't feel comfortable doing this, then put on some swimming goggles or a gas mask. This will also be handy if there is a mustard gas or dirty bomb attack while you are chopping the onions.
