Have you ever given your cat a bath?

Cat in a bath - Good idea or not?

I realize cats do a good job at cleaning themselves but I think they should also get a real bath in soap and water. I haven't tried it yet but am considering it. My cats look clean enough and have very shiny coats. I was in the shower this morning and of course my cat came in the bathroom because I forgot to close the door. I opened the shower curtain and invited him in. He looked interested and came up to the tub but that's as far as he would go! Of course he was just curious as he is with everything. Is it a good idea to give cats a real bath? Have you ever tried it? I'm going to google it to see what I come up with.

I have never given any of my cats a full bath. Of course, all have been indoor cats, and are fully capable of keeping themselves clean. Once, my now-ex husband splashed mustard on by then-calico kitty, and I had to spot wash her. I did not want her licking that spicy stuff off herself. I have heard that certain breeds do require bathing. I do watch shows on Animal Planet. I believe it was the Pekinese that require baths. I don't suppose it has to do with their long hair, because there are a lot of long-hair breeds. I have owned a couple, and they didn't require any baths. However, long-haired cats especially require regular hair-combing.

I wouldn't want to take a cat into my bathtub but I would let him get in the shower with me if he wanted to.

We never gave my cat or my renter's cat a bath. I would not try it and I doubt the cats would like it.

They may not like it but sometimes it's a necessary evil.

ONe of my cats has a dry skin problem and I think a good bath would help him. Now I have to tell him that.

Yes, I even bathe my rabbits and guinea pigs. My one cat will get in the rub with you. When she was a kitten she use to run into the bathroom, and sit ont eh side of the tub playing with the water. Her brother likes water, but wont get dunked into it I more or less have to get a cup and distract him by pouring it then pouring it on him. My other cat wont go near water, but he was an abuse case.

I think if they were bathed at a young age it would go a lot easier. I can understand about the abused cat...so sad.

I think so as well, some simple don't like water. I know many even dogs as well who are like this, some simple like the water whereas others don't. My one male cat hates the water, but will sit in the bathroom while I have a bath, whereas his sister loves the bath, and playing with the water.

I tried that once, but the cat wasn't impressed, no matter he used to try scratching at the shower cabinet when I was showering, as if he wanted to join me. Didn't seem like a good idea after all, looks like the cats make a good job out of keeping themselves clean, without us helping them along.

Yes, they do a good job at keeping themselves clean but I would feel better if I could give them a bath. It would be easy if I had a suit of armor...lol...

All the time that I have had cats I have never known one single cat to take any interest in water, and certainly wouldn't attempt to bath them, only our littlest cat, Octavia was very curious and often when I was having a bath would jump up and sit on the side of the bath, she would paw at the bubbles at times, but she never dared to get in or venture any further. I don't personally think it's a good idea to give a cat a real bath.

Long time ago I tried to bathe my cat. However, it was so scared and always wanted to escape. I have to say that the cats hate to have a bath. In fact they often use their paws to clean themselves. Perhaps it is not necessary for us to bathe them. Cats are the animals who like to be clean.

Absolutely not! Cats don't like water and it would be cruel to give them a bath! I have 16 cats and I don't give any of them a bath because they bathe themselves. I do however, give my 5 dogs a bath but never any of my cats. How would you like someone bigger than you to do something to you that you don't want done? You wouldn't like it anymore than the cat would like a bath. Don't do it.

There are a few breeds of cats that like water, but most dislike it. Probably one could train a cat to submit to be bathed with soap and water, but one would have to start when they are small kittens.

I have to bath my cat, because he gets so dirty and smelly that he can't manage to clean himself. There is nothing wrong with bathing a cat, but they usually ain't too happy with it :/ My cat is fine with it though. Just NEVER force the cat to take a bath, let him/her decide themself. And a bath is only necessary if they are too dirt to clean themself fully. Have a nice day :)

Cats like to be clean and they can clean themselves certainly, so I believe it isn’t too necessary to give the cats bath. Though cats do often curious and come to near bathroom if you don’t close it. But I think some cats need to be bathed if they somehow getting dirty in something like oil stuff or drenched in dirty water. Although it’s certainly not an easy job to bath the cats.
