There was an earthquake in Ya An, Sichuan Province in my country. Many people got wounded seriously because they jumped from the houses after the earthquake occurred. Of course this is not the right behavior. I wonder what is the best to do if there is an earthquake.

well it is so scary in that time and everybody try to save his or her life in any way of jumping and running.. well, but i think it is good to stand in an open area. or stand next to wall not in the center of room or close area. better to be in the corner side.. but the best is just run to an open area out of home...

Hello You Less. I experienced two earthquakes in Chile visiting a dear My Lot friend. Luckily her comfortable house is very strongly built. Jumping from houses isn't the right action when an earthquake happens. It is best to stay where you are unless things are falling around you. In that case it is better to move to a safer place in the area you are. Like hide under a table.

Hi,
There are several rules when a strong earthquake occur but jumping out of windows is not one of them. Generally buildings don't just collapse right away in the first few minutes of a quake so the most safe option is to stay inside the building and use any strong shield such as tables and doorjambs to keep from being hit by falling object from the ceiling. In the absence of falling objects, the next logical step is to get out of the building as fast but in the safest way possible, using handholds so as not to get felled by the swaying motion. Use the stairs and not elevators, once outside go to the rallying area for evacuation to higher place in case a tsunami follows for places in coastal areas.
A regular earthquake drill should be done in order to avoid confusion and panic once it occurs. The local government should see to it is done in the speediest way possible and notes can be taken to avoid mistakes until it becomes a habit if done overtime.

If there already is an earthquake, well you cannot do much about it... but I think the best would be to behave and stay calm. Behave the right courteous way as is expected of you - help others who are trapped and be better citizens.

If there is an earthquake, I heard that if we are in the building and hard to go out, we have to protect ourselves first by going under the desk. If we are in the building far from ground, we have to take stairs and don't take lift.

The best thing to do when earthquake occur is to just go to the safer place. If you are inside the building, just go under the table just to keep yourself safe from debris or any fallen object. As much as possible, leave the building quickly.

We are fortunate not having earthquake here but had some experience of tremors due to after effect of neighbouring countries earthquake disaster .
I believe we need to stay calm so that we could do the right thing and not ended in panic state. As I used to watch from the movies, people will try to hide under tables so to avoid debris from falling unto them. Besides, for those staying in high rise building they will avoid taking elevator but evacuate building through the stairways as fast as possible. And get to the safer ground and follow order it there is any .
