Well, for me Gentleman is the one who is really polite and sophisticated.. I love sophisticated, soft spoken and handsome guys! Men in my home country are really Gentle, they would never pass the door if a lady is there, they would go to the corner and politely they will ask to ladies first to pass... they would never sit in the car without opening and ask to lady to sit first and after they close the door, they will sit and drive.. they would never talk loudly, they would never come empty handed to a lady as always they surprise you with something as a gift. well they should be so caring and soft spoken like what I have seen in guys of my home country.. and result of marring out of your country is to not have those gentlemen ...lol... what is your idea about a gentleman? and who is gentleman for you? :)

I don't know in which category I belongs. Normally, other people who judge others by observing people's behaviour and I like all those habits what you mentioned above. It is not just for a formality, buy doing so, I feel comfortable and feel good at mind and nice behavior is as simple as clean water. So, I never prefer any kind of bad habits towards women or ladies mainly because I just don't like it. I think to have a lots of good friends (girls) for me is may be the same reason. Even in office also, we have around 150 members in the dept. and 60% above are girls and only few got married and all others are just fresh like college and after. I got a nice companionship with most of them and I still have the faith that, if we behave nicely, we will get it back double in return.

Hi Viju/fun, It is true that our behaviour shows to an extent, what type of a person we are. In the modern life, people behave so gently as part of their profession/career life pattern and they may be different in their real life. In the last weekend, we were out for 3 days in a resot and few female staff over there were so well behaved, mannered, smiling and talking nicely and all. We may think that how good they are. But in fact, they all are behaving in such a way that they it is part of their profession and they need to be with other in their premises. At the same time, if we happened to meet the same girls outside the place anywere, we cannot expect them to behave in such a manner anywhere else. I mean to say, being gentle in a person's life shows their culture etc. Here I can't find such a well behaved/mannered people around at all times and about 95% people are not belongs in such a category. I don't know why people so, may be lack of knowledge or they may be thinking that such behaviours may not make any difference or they never learned to how to behave etc.

I like that appropriated 2 words, "Polite and sophisticated". Consideration to feeling of others and being unmoved by silly provocations are unavoidable qualities of gentleness. But which is that "home country"? What that "out of your country" means?

Gentlemen are vulnerable to marriage. Gentlewoman too.

that is for everyone... if a man is enough good and gentle then of course his partner is happy with him and what is the result of being happy together? a good and successful life...! and opposite if a man does not know how to be well behaved and respect then he hurt his life partner and fight and discuss and in that atmosphere who can be happy...? opposite of that also is true... so it is good to be a gentleman and gentlewoman...

Besides the polite and good matters, I think gentlemen also refer to honest, brave and just men. They will try to keep their promises. They will not tell a lie. In brief, gentlemen are the ideal men I am glad that there are a lot of gentlemen in your home country.

Hi, Oh, i thought gentleman never promises (so no worries of keeping their promises)
• India

why they should keep promises if they are honest? honest one does not need to give promise and a gentleman of course should be honest..

The one who treat everyone with respect and behaves politely is a gentleman for me. No I don’t think so a handsome man (a good looking man) can be a gentleman too. In a lighter side, in my country a guy would open the Car door if the Car is hers or the Car is new or if she’s his Boss, if they don’t speak loudly people will think he’s scared of his gf/wife…….. lol. Sorry no offence meant to any of the good and bold gentlemen here….

By talking loud, he’s trying to show his manliness (power of being a man). In this country the females are expected to be quiet, calm and speak in a low voice, thereby exhibiting good womanhood....

The gentleman you described sounds like what we in the USA would call a true southern gentleman. At one time, boys were trained, usually by their mothers, to treat all females too treat all females with courtesy and respect. Then came women's lib. Young women were insulted when a gentleman insisted in taking the lead in everything, opening doors, doing the driving, planning the evening, etc. The women insisted on having the right to be equal to a man in every  way, They could smoke and drink in public, drive their own cars, and pay for their own meals. Some of the women's lib agenda was good for women in general, but sometimes, I think that they have lost more than they gained.

Being polite to other women with good manners, and the most important thing is that he should be sincere to his beloved one and respect her. A gentleman should always be the same no matter who he is with.

To me a gentleman is very gentle and is a man. Extremely quiet when he talks, tiptoes around the room in a free, fluttery manner, skin so soft it is completely gentle like a babies bottom, an incredibly slow breathing manner and a immensely weak grip on anything he touches or holds as not to crumple or damage it in any way.

My boyfriend is the main definition of Gentleman, setting aside that his my man he knows how to react in polite manner when he doesn't agree, he takes care of woman by nature like simple manner of letting the woman be first in line, carries the bag when he saw someone having hard time in carrying the bags.. those stuffs always listens and he's so cute haha.. he's sensitive to others in man's touch way..
