So...I have a retarded cardinal.

Last weekend my daughter started complaining about some birds keeping her awake at night. It seems some cardinals have started building a nest on top of the bend in the gutter up near her window & one of them kept bumping into her window. I figured I'd have to go knock the nest down to get them to stop but never got around to it because before I could the female was at the back of the house bumping into the larger window beside my desk . Ok... That's odd. I figured she'd seen her reflection or something & was trying to drive it off but she's now been doing it for DAYS. She'll often land on the screen & just hangs there staring in. What could possiblly be going on in this silly birds mind? I keep picturing her saying " Hello... Anybody in there?" Anyone else have random acts of oddness from the local critters around them or is this the opening volly of an attack like the "The birds"?

Cardinals are beautiful birds, aren't they? My guess is that she is looking at her reflection in the window and is worried about her nest area. Last spring we had a bird start building a nest on a TINY ledge above our dining room window. I couldn't believe how a female bird would do that! The ledge is only about 2 inches wide. There is no way a nest would survive there. Even if she was able to balance it enough to stay (which I doubt), the wind and rain would knock it down. I never saw a bird try something like that before. Needless to say we thought we better discourage her from doing that. My husband got a ladder and climbed up to knock what she had of the nest down. Sure enough, the next day she had started building it again. She had about 10 pieces of dried grass up there starting over. He knocked it down again and she finally gave up on the idea.

I thought that's what it was when she was attackign the front window that is near the nest but now she's at the back window which is nowhere near the nest...

I have the same experience, though it isn't a cardinal (I don't know what type of bird. But, there is this open part of my room like a patio where it has a mirror there, then everyday there's this bird with long tail that tweets beautifully. But after it sings, I notice that it would attack it's reflection on the mirror. It would somehow peck on it violently until it becomes exhausted then it would leave. It's been doing that for a couple of months now.. hehe.. I got used to it, I just really like it when it sings. I think as long as it doesn't look hurt or is hurting itself, then let it be. Perhaps you could move it farther the window so that it wouldn't hurt itself. Have a great mylot experience ahead!

So long as it's only messing with the back window I'll probably leave it alone. I find her amusing to watch. Should she start at my daughters window & keeping her up at night again then I'll probably have to scare the bird off.

Before the price of birdseed went so high I had a feeder in the tree outside the window of the room I work in. I loved watching the birds but they also watched me. In fact, if I would forget to fill the feeder or it was just too darn cold outside a few of the birds would sit on the windowsill and make a fuss, flying back and forth between the feeder and the window. And when I lived out west and enjoyed hummingbirds, they would buzz near my head if the feeder was empty. Birds can be smart and know who the easy marks are! Maybe you could put up a picture of an owl or something behind that screen to scare off the cardinal?

Actually that's an excelent idea. There's bobble head owl scarecrows you can get. I might have to pick one up if she doesn't quit.
