A snippet is a writing (story, poem, etc) that is thirty words or less. I was introduced to the "snippet" form of writing several years ago. Lots of different types of writing, particularly poetry, can fall into the "snippet" category. For example, this poem, in the Tanka form (syllable count 5-7-5-7-7)which is 26 words long:
How I wish I could
Walk with you through Armstrong Woods;
That we could enjoy
The sound of rushing water
And the song of birds above.
(c) Stacey Uffelman 6/28/10
Poetry forms like Haikus could also fall into the Snippet category.
Inspired by a friend on another site who did the same thing, I started a series (story) in which each chapter is a Snippet.
Don't know what to write about? You might try this short form of writing.

How appropriate that this is my first post. :)
A snippet is also sometimes called a smaller version of something. In my case, the reason I chose this as my Screen name was because of two things:
A)I envision writing small snapshots of discussions that can become bigger with input and
B)It is my son's nickname (he is a smaller version of me) :).

Here is a snippet haiku I just composed:
Snippety snip snip
Creatures of the night and day
Snip and snip, away
