how did you spend your birthday during your debut (18-girls; 21-boys)?

and as i remember well, it was my 18th birthday where me and my friends sat on the stairway of our school way back in college. we are chitchatting about something and they greeted me happy birthday as well. i just do not know how to feel that time because i am a little ashamed not only to my friends, classmates but to all the people who knew that it was my natal day. it is because it should be a memorable day where there is a debut party. but there is none,so, i never experience a thing like that. it is not a big deal for me actually, it is just that, as a young girl before, it was a big dream seeing herself in a very grandeur event having a cotillion. debut happens only once in everyone's life. it should be spent wondrously. but having a party is just an illusive longing when we are talking about practicality. i guess, when your parents cannot afford or refuse to host or to shoulder the expenses and all, let us just try to understand. living a life for now is not that easy where everyone could easily find money. but i guess, there is an another way on how to spend it memorably even without the physique decors in the halls and balls and expensive gowns, foods and etc. you can spend it with your parents, love ones, siblings and friends. i guess, afterall - it is the thoughts that count most. so during that time, my mother gave me small amount of money enough for three persons (because that time i have two bestfriends) including me so that i can treat them in a fastfood restaurant. i just smiled when someone greeted me shyly because i know i cannot afford to treat them all so what about you, where and how did you spend your debut?

I don't think I HAD a "debut." I could be all depressed & -'no one loves me enough to give me a debut' about it, but I don't think I've ever seen anyone's "debut" ever (unless you count First Communion, Baptism, Confirmation, singing Karaoke or many of the other ritual/performance debuts I've probably had & seen ... but you don't think so much about the person appearing as you do about what they are doing up there ) The first debut of me-as-a-person will probably be my wedding-day, when I will finally be proud of who I am becoming (an active part in a family-machine!)

@missjahn Move in with me! (or some other guy) Yes, it will be very like a 'marriage'; but we/you-two will remain 'friends with benefits' (although a more-solid declaration of partnership might be helpful in being parents your child can be proud-of).

like mine when i had my 18th birthday. but i guess not because no one loves me, is just that i do not have money for the party or cotillion. of course, as a catholic, we must undergo first communion, confirmation. i love singing in the karaoke.. congratulations... as much as i want to settle down, it scared me to some manner and that if i were to choose, i do not want to get married and stay single forever in my life. no hassles, no husbands that will rant me but i want a kid. where should i buy that haha!

I don't remember anymore. I think it wasn't even celebrated. We're not rich to have a celebration with all those visitors around. But it's my dream to have one for my eldest daughter. She is 15 now and in just few years she'll be 18. I hope and pray I would have the resources when that time comes.

it is possible if you believe it will be. as parents, we would like to see our children happy and live life at its best and also let them experience what we do not experience during our childhood days. i mean, it is not necessary to celebrate birthday parties to extreme happening but if we can afford, then why not. it is a one chance experience and it cannot be replayed once more. so why not make the best out of it. but if it is impossible, we could have another option and that is to celebrate it simply along with love ones and friends. i guess, it is the though that counts afterall ;)

I didn't have a big party with the cotillion and everything. I just had a reservation in a restaurant where I invited my high school and college friends then after that, we went out for some night out :) It wasn't anything fancy. Just a simple celebration with friends and family and partying the night off :)

that would be great. at least, it was being exerted with efforts still and being planned. it is the thought that count. as long as you spend it happily with the people who are dear to you, so the celebration is a successful one. i guess, you enjoyed it a lot and a worthwhile remembrance when you could remember it in a while :) great

It was fun :) Although I had a celebration in my mind on what I want to do but since there were constraints at that time, it turned out differently. But I'm still glad I was able to celebrate my 18th since it only comes once :)

I remembered in the olden days, my mother would cook two hard boiled eggs with "mee sua" (a kind of longevity noodle) for my dad during his birthdays . However, she does not celebrate birthdays for all our siblings and we never ask for it as well. It was just a usual day with nothing special. So, I do not have any nice memory about my 18 years old .

yeah misua, i know that noodle. we used to eat it as viand cooked with sardines in it. just my mother gave me few pennies to treat my friends to eat in a fastfood chain and that was jollibee. i guess she had been given me 200 pesos or five dollars more or less. hmm.. it is alright, how could i ask for more that i do not have my own earnings during that time. and i was a student during that time. so i stay contented without regrets :)

I am just like you . I don't tell my friends about my birthday even on that day i does not go to college. I just spend my day with my best friends and family.

On my 18th birthday, me, my family and very select, close friends just went swimming in our pool house. We prepared some food right there and spent the whole day swimming, doing karaoke, shooting pools and just having fun. My birthday is the summer time there in the Philippines so I figure this is much more fun than the usual traditional debuts which is also more expensive.
