Yogurt as ‘Dahivada’

I am very fond of fresh Yogurt, in the morning I take a cup of it to which I add table salt, rock salt, small piece of green chili and black peeper, earlier I used to add sugar; but now because of diabetes I don’t use sugar.
Yogurt contains good bacteria I am told.
One or 2 days yogurt tastes sour, we use them in many dishes; some make butter milk it is sour; some make ‘lassi’ from it adding sugar cashew nuts and blend them. Lassi tastes sweet; during summer we prefer butter milk and lassi over coke or soft drinks that have chemicals.
We also make ‘Dahivada’; see picture.
Vada are made from black bean flour, fried in oil next soaked in water for 30 minutes, the oil thus gets out. The vada are now removed from water and kept aside till water drains out.
Next yogurt is blended with water, little salt; to this the vada are added; they soak the yogurt and swell; now serve in a plate; add black peeper/red pepper/ red chili powder , little sugar, more salt as per your taste.
All these keep your belly cool in summer.
Any such plain no oil food you know?
Please respond comment.
Thanks in advance. Professor Dr. Bhuwan Saraf. PhD. April 27. 2013.

dearest professor,
I have never tasted a fresh yogurt, straight from being made. what I get is from tetra packs and cans which I know have added additives already. you are blessed having those fresh things. I can remember that when I was little, the whole family went to the province to visit some relatives. we were offered fresh carabaos milk and "kesong puti" (sour cheese).
it is really very hot these days and fruit juices is the popular thing here.
have a great day.

My grandfather, in the summertime would have buttermilk with corn bread for his evening meal. I think some older people were much smarter than we are now. My grandfather lived in a state that is hotter than mine, and this was one good thing he did. He lived to be almost one hundred.

In the United States most people buy the sweetened yogurt in the store. It is not nearly so healthy as the fresh homemade kind. It is really easy to make and I make my own for the last year or two. I have taught my daughter how as well because she believes it is good to feed her small children. I like it in many of the same places we would eat sour cream. I like it plain, and had not thought to add various spices. Your post made me hungry. Yogurt is very healthy for the entire body, but especially the digestion. There are other sweeteners that are not as bad for diabetics, like honey and stevia, but it really is quite good just with fruit, or vegetables.
