Not An Adult Because You Have A Fear??

So, someone told me I am not an adult because I don't drive since I have always been afraid to learn. I have a horrible fear of driving, I cannot picture myself doing it, I panic and freeze up when I get behind the wheel. Does having this fear make me a child??

I'm having nothing but problems here today on myLot..don't know why so I'm not going to be sticking around. I think that's silly to say you are not an adult because you are afraid to drive. My grandson is 27 and still doesn't drive...he's really afraid he's going to kill someone therefore will not drive. To each his own. Maybe someday he'll gain more confidence, as maybe you will too, and learn to drive. I would rather see you not drive until you feel good about it, than to see you drive in fear, which will more than likely cause an accident. Whoever told you that is silly.

I understand, I am having major problems here today too. It is annoying! Lol. I think it is silly too. I am 28, was always afraid to drive my whole life. I am afraid of killing others or myself. =( I don't know if I will ever be able to learn. I freeze, and by freezing behind the wheel I could really kill someone! No thank you.

You may be suffering from panic disorder and should seek psychiatric help. If left untreated, panic disorder can develop into a psychological syndrome of avoidance. Panic disorder run in families and have a biological and genetic component. Treatments include relaxation training, therapy designed to modify or desensitize phobic behavior, and anti-anxiety medication.

Many adults have phobias. That doesn't make them immature. That person is an idiot.

You are an adult. However, you really should try to learn to drive. There may not always be others you can depend on to get around. If I may, I suggest you find a big empty parking lot to gecome familiar with how the car operates...get the feel of the steering, gas pedal, brake, how it feels to be in control. I really think that might help. Baby steps.

I don't really think you need to hire anyone to teach you. First of all, you need to get a driver's manual from your state. Here in PA, you can pick one up at a state police drivers test center. You just need to find a friend who will help you and you need to get out and do it. The more you drive, the more comfortable you will becone with it.

I know I should learn to drive but I have not found anyone with the patience to teach me. I cannot afford to hire someone to teach me and I cannot afford driving school either. I have driven a couple times in parking lots and around the neighborhood but so far it has never gotten me over my fear yet...

Just because you're scared to drive doesn't make you less of an adult. I actually learnt how to drive when I was 18, and to tell you the truth I wasn't ready - and that actually dragged on my learning process. But then a while later I was not scared anymore and determined to get my license and then I succeeded. So I think you should wait until you're ready, otherwise it's just a waste of time and money. And everyone is scared of something, and that doesn't make you less of an adult. Don't bother with that comment the person made.

My parents never let me learn when I was younger and I think that has something to do with my fear as well. I am 28, was always afraid to drive my whole life. I am afraid of killing others or myself. =( I don't know if I will ever be able to learn. I freeze, and by freezing behind the wheel I could really kill someone! No thank you.

Awwww. Well it's ok! I have a friend and she's not really interested in learning how to drive but for her it was mostly because she lives in Europe and they have good public transportation. I mean as long as you don't mind not being able to drive then whatever other people say doesn't matter.

Of course not. Everybody has some fear to do something. We can't push ourselves to do the things we fear. If you would like to change this situation, maybe you can try to drive the cars in the amusement park.

I thought the same thing, we all have individual fears. I just need someone who is trained to get me through this fear.

You don't qualify to be an adultkid just because you have phobia in driving. It is fairly normal for any adults to be fearful of something.

Wow that person sounds immature to suggest that. Plenty of adults don't drive. If you are afraid of driving don't worry about trying to learn. The person who told you this is just being immature. That person is the one who is not the adult.

If you need to be able to drive (as they say you do if you live in Oklahoma City) and that fear is the only thing stopping you, then yes you need to 'grow up.' But if all your necessities are within a distance you can comfortably walk/bike/'jump,' then there's no reason to 'get over your fear' (which is a very reasonable fear).

Sorry to hear that someone said this to you. That is really awful that some people do not think before they open there mouth. No you are not a child. You are a grown woman, with a great husband, great children, and a household and awesome business that you are working on growing. We all have fears of something and this fear of driving just prevents you from doing that. There are many people who have fears some have fears of social anxiety but that doesn't mean they are not an adult. We all have our own struggles that we have to contend with but we work through them. And obviously you are doing well even without driving. Your family has a home, your children have food and clothing and whatever they may need so you are taking care of everything that needs to be addressed even without driving. So people who make comments like that make me extremely annoyed . Here is a for you and remember you are a wonderful person, wife, and mother. Don't let ANYONE tell you anything different.

Not at all. You only need to be confident by driving, but you must learn to drive a car. The best way is that you enrol at a drivers school. Of course that cost some money, but is the best chance to learn, then you can obtain your driver license.

Yeah I cannot afford driving school which is why I have not enrolled yet... =( I know I need to hire someone to teach me because everyone in my life has tried and failed! No one is patient enough with me.

Of course, even adults have their own fears. Just face your fear. Conquer it and who knows you will be the best driver out of what you know. I know it will be a challenge for you. Just try it. Experience is the best teacher.

I don't think so. Everyone has some fear of different things. For you its driving. Its okay. But, you should try to remove the fear of driving. have a nice day

I don't think so, we have all fears and some of us until they get old they wasn't able to overcome the fear, literally there is a big difference between and adult and child and basic difference is the age. Fear is not a basis to judge a person.

I would feel trapped and isolated without a drivers license! I waited until I was 18 when I got mine. I think you should get over your fear. What if your husband dumps you? What if you need or want to get a job that requires you to get a drivers license? I suggest you get one just incase something would happen! If you don't you are screwed!

As long as you are a human being, you will have your emotions with you. One of that emotions is fear. What sets the mature from the child is that, mature individual does not succumb to their fear. They conquer it.

hi, well this might make you feel better that its been 3 yrs i am trying to learn driving and havent been successful yet! And on top of it my parents and my younger brother(who is very young than me still in school can drive better than me) keep on taunting me everyday that 'i can never learn driving'. And i have started feeling the same my brother keeps on joking about me driving and how i hit the bumper(which is true and have done it many times) so when i am considered amateur and him someone like a heroic driver like in some movie it does feel bad but then i think hey it doesnt mean that he is perfect at everything there are things at which i am good at and he is not. Agreed i am not good driver so what it doesnt mean i just give up yes i have tried and will keep on trying without thinking of others viewpoints about me! And you know whatever one does people always have habbit or hobby of commenting on it. So just think positive and dont think about what people have to say about you.. Just dont give up on trying to learn because until you keep trying its never a failure!
