Hi,
We have shifted to our new rental house on 26th Jan.
It is my friend's house. His all old things are in this house. His fridge is very old and we are using it. He told me to use his fridge. But it is 37 years old and it doesn't defrost automatically. It becomes so cold that all the food and vegetables kept in it become like ice and so it doesn't taste good. But we can not buy new fridge because this house has many things already and don't have any place to new things. We have given our old fridge in our previous house to a boy who helped us in shifting a lot.

I agree with you that the fridge you have, really belong to the museum and I believe you have to consider a few issues to change it.
For starters, it is going to cost you on your electric bills being that the generator will be overworked when the fridge is over frosted. So, you have to consider whether you can put up with a higher electrical bill in the coming future.
I believe it is not environmentally friendly considering that it uses CFC gas for their refrigeration capabilities. I am sure you are aware what CFC does to our environment especially our ozone layer.
Last, I think it is dangerous to let such an old fridge run because you just don't know when it will hold out. If it breaks down then it is alright but do consider what it might be if it short-circuited and a fire breaks out.
I hope that you can discuss this with your friend before something bad happens and worse you get the blame because you are the tenant. Please be careful.

I totally agree with artemeis here. For safety reasons , you need to get rid of this old stuff before you regret it. Tell your friend that if he can't give this up, he might as well keep it for himself.

hi friend, honestly i think you should never use that thing, it will not only save you on your electric bill but it would help us all by helping the environment, hope this link would help you and everyone reading decide http://michaelbluejay.com/electricity/refrigerators.html OMG that energy monster was built before 2001. You can buy a new fridge if you want friend, i know it, it's just the will to do so

Oh, I bet you have the metal icetrays. How cool! I hope you have a microwave so you can thaw things out. That would get old having everything frozen up. What do you do?

That is sure an old fridge you got there. It's a strong one. After 37 years its still working but really consumes a lot of energy. Also the frosting need to be fix. I suggest you sell this old one, maybe in the junkshop or any repair shop or collector shop. Then buy a new one for you to used. Hopefully you can do this..

Hi,
I can not sell this because it's not mine. And if I buy a new fridge then it will occupy more space. In this house lots of other old things of my friends are there. So we will buy new fridge after having our own house.
Thank you for the response.

Just ask your friend if it would be possible if you would donate the old refrigerator so that you could buy a new one. It is useless keeping an old refrigerator as it will cause you more money to pay for the electrical bills.

Hi,
We have decided to buy a new house. We are going to leave this house after having our own house. So we don't buy new fridge in this house. We will use this fridge for some days of summer.
Thank you for the response.

I do not know any old things in our house except our clay pot. We usually use it for water preservation so that when we drink it is cold without the presence of ice. I mean, the coldness and freshness of water is natural when we put in there. We also use it in making a fish sauce through preserving fish with salt. My father said, that clay pot is already there when he was two years old and now he is already 45 years old. lol.

Hi,
You are right. The water in clay pot is cooled naturally. We also have earthen pot or clay pot in our house for cooling water.
Thank you for the response.

If your refrigerator is already that old,it is also like in our house.I have a refrigerator that is 50 years old and still very operational in spite of its age.
Old fashioned appliances are really very durable unlike the brand new products that are more high tech are easily destroyed.I think this also is notable how it is handled by its users. The more you take good care of your things the it could be useable, and this you could never count how old the thing it could become until you decide to change it with a new one.The only thing we could know about old appliances is that its electricity consumption is getting higher and the other benefits we enjoy it before is already consumed by its age, that it has produced more ice than before, and it does not defrost by its own already.Thank you very much and enjoy myLot.

Is he renting the place to you? Its really important to have a properly working fridge. Besides keeping foods fresh, there is also the matter of keeping them safe to eat. Can you explain this to your friend that its really not safe for you to have your food in this fridge. You also have the issue of it using more energy because its so old. And that in turn will make a higher electric bill. We have a thing called Freecycle on our area, might check to see if you have one where you live. Its a yahoo group with members that offer items for free and request items. You can check craigslist for anyone selling one for a good price. Since its a rental there are rules that the landlord needs to go by and having a fridge in good working order I am pretty sure is a part of these guidelines.

Hi,
The friend is not forcing us to use the fridge. But we haven't brought our own fridge here. that was working well. But we gave it to a boy who was a student of my wife and he helped us in shifting. We have decided to use this fridge for some days and buy a new one after going to our new house.
thank you for the response.

I believe it is wise for you to get a new fridge. The 37 years old fridge needed much attention in cleaning as it does not defrost automatically . Besides that, it will consume more electricity and not safe as well.

well i think sometimes old things (even if they are not in working condition)are just good memorie and we dont want to replace them with new one,as i have a cooker which my mother bought 35 years ago,she used it and now im using it,just it's handle is broken but i can manage it...it's not like that i dont have a new one,i have... my mother gave it on my marriage, but i love to cook in my mom's one and i wish i could give it to my daughter at her marriage hahahaha.....if it would be still in working condition....as she is just 8 years old.
