Inviting Friends Round

We're just packing away after an afternoon barbecue with local friends. Lots of food and plenty of beer were consumed and we had a pretty good time.
Barbecues are almost always how we have friends over. I don't think we've ever had a formal dinner party since we came here and as the house is still half built it's not really suitable for inviting friends over for coffee either unless the weather can be guaranteed fine enough to sit out.
What occasions do you invite friends into your home? Or do you prefer to meet friends elsewhere? What do you do?

I'm just picky about the types of friends I invite. I'll only invite the friends that would be the most understanding of my situation and my fixer upper house..

It's been so long we've been like this that I'm beginning to forget what it's like to have people round. We do have one close friend who we don't care about seeing the house. He came round last night actually, after we'd locked up for the night so I was even in my PJs.
