Crochet Patterns?

So I've been trying to come up with a crochet pattern to put out for sale and maybe one for free, but I really don't know where to start and what kind of pattern I should write; I've been considering doing a blanket but I feel like that would be a big step for me since I've never even written a simple pattern. Do you write your own patterns, if so, do you find it difficult and are some harder than others to write? or are they all basically about the same?

I've been trying to develop some designs to sell, and I've only come up with a couple so far, but the hardest part for me is actually coming up with a workable concept that's original and appealing. Once that's down actually drafting the pattern can be tedious and time consuming but it isn't as hard. I like to make hats so that's what I've designed... I've also designed a crochet square (it's free if you want to download it) and I think that (small motifs like that) could be a good place to start. There are all kinds of options and you can experiment with techniques, patterns, colors, and yarns.
