Don't put your faith in websites...

Multiply was my first love. It was very similar to myspace, blogs, pictures, video, etc. etc. I kept all my family blogs there, and all my photos. Then a friend there referred me to Yuwie. Yuwie was the first paying site I was on. At first it was a lot of fun, but the site got overrun by jerks and spammers, and the site owner seemed to be more interested in those people than the ones who just wanted to socialize. Most people left long before the site died. When the owner posted that he was taking the site down by a certain date, and then took it down earlier, before some people had a chance to save off their stuff. MySpace was one that I duplicate posted my blogs on. I had a few friends over there who were nowhere else. When the blogging function stopped working, the site didn't seem interested at all in fixing it. Meanwhile, a lot of Yuwie people had gone over to Ning, where they could set up their own private networks, and isolate themselves and their friends from spammers. Most of those sites went belly up when Ning started charging a monthly fee. Multiply died late last year when the owner's decided to drop the social site, and concentrate on their "Multiply marketplace". To their credit, they kept the site up months longer than they had told people, so everybody had more than enough time to save off their content. A Yuwie friend referred me to myLot. When Yuwie went south, it became my favorite place to hang out. Despite issues with the notifiers and other issues, I enjoyed most of my time here. But now, well, I just don't know. Seems like the lemmings are abandoning the site for Bubblews mostly. Don't know if I will go or if I will stay. I wonder what this site will end up being. I just know I feel kind of empty and let down. Don't put your faith in websites. They are here for the owners' purposes, not yours.

@SinfulRose Everybody says follow them to Bubblews. I think mylot has put the final nail in their coffin the editing feature still doesn't work and I can't find my discussion that I started 2 or 3 days ago. The only thing I like about this new layout is that you can correct your errors. Mylot should rethink what they have done and correct their errors.

England Dan and John Ford Coley once sang: "What's forever for?" I believe that's what's on everyone's mind now and reeling to the aftershocks that just took place here. I think the damage wouldn't have been that serious had the people upstairs here been honest and upfront with what is ahead. This site's (v2006) success has all the contributions of the good 251,672 members to thank for in terms of web content, SEO and even page ranks. The least they could have done was to tell everybody of their plans of it becoming a social networking site than a discussion site. If you disagree, then do explore around everything is about following and the next moment all hell will break loose when we have people that will come with all sorts of scams and spams. It doesn't even have the safety mechanisms of an SNS to begin with, so you can imagine the risks and imminent dangers here. Some people are just ignorant and I hope they realize it fast. Sad to say, this management is really some works as it works itself into the category of a villain site. I suppose in today's world - Nothing's Forever.

I suspect they wouldn't have wanted to let people know in advance about the site no longer paying, as people would have gone crazy trying to rack up $$. But I wish they had told us more even so.

MyLot was my first ever social network and the only one that offered me everything. Discussions, friends and a little pocket money as well. There was a light handed, almost invisible, moderation, that sometimes created problems when the members squabbled, but all in all it was a very satisfying place to be. Now it's a mess. I entirely accept that the management here can do what they like. However, most businesses thrive on repeat orders and this one is no different. They have never shared with us their vision and cannot now be disappointed that we act with horror at their decision to change the familiar with barely no notice and ultimatums. The dust will settle eventually of course, it always does. However, unless you own the website you can never be 100% certain of its direction and longevity. Perhaps therein lies the answer. Instead of being losers always at the mercy of others, perhaps we should start our own site and discover for ourselves just how difficult it is to succeed in this business! We'd probably end up not talking to each other! LOL.

When Yuwie went down the tubes, a lot of us talked about starting our own site. Never got anywhere. I think we had the talent, but not the capital....

@RawBill1 Lot of people went to Ning from Yuwie when it was free but then most dropped it when they started charging... Problem was, each little clique had its own Ning. For various reasons, I doubt everybody will agree on the same hangout.

@RawBill1 - I am not sure that I wouldn't know where to start and I'd still need to have a wedge upfront to pay the first people to reach cashout. I wish that I were more of an entrepreneur sometimes. Probably just as well that I am not!

True that, Yuwie is for sale for 15,000 dollars how that site fell like a rock. You imagine if they sold it at their peak. They would have gotten way more than 15,000. Now I do not know if anyone will want to even buy it at that price considering everyone knows how far it fell. This is why I think making everything about money is bad for society. Which I have wrote in several posts. Imagine how many great things we have lost because people are more money focused instead of being more society focused.

Heh.. A cynic like me will never put faith in any websites. I was never loyal to any website to begin with. If I found a website that suits my needs then I'll stay if not I'll abandoned/stay but not active anymore. Yeah.. I don't recall being a cheerleader for any website or bash anyone for hating any website. The only website that you can trust and have faith on was your OWN website because you're your own boss.

i would have to agree with what you have said here i was on gather for 3 years----my first experience on a social site..... at the end of april, they were "in the process of changing servers, and would be back the next day"......that was the end of the site.... had i realized that gather was going to die, i would have contacted some good friends on the site, to get emails, so we could keep in touch....(sigh) now, i know better i am here for now blessings wendy

I got an email address with Free UK. It is like rubbish in that it takes ages to load. Then it began to charge about 14 pounds a year. I use Hot Mail and rarely look at Free UK. I am sad about the My Lot revamp. I have migrated to Mora Chat and I love it there. I have been there for 4 days and have earned more than 2 dollars. I will soon be up to 9 dollars to pay out. I will give a link just in case.
Get paid to chat, general chat forum on all subjects.

Yes, I use to be on Yuwie also and had much fun, one thing I never made payout there either. I don't like the changes here at MyLot but gonna try and see what happens; I have met some really nice people here and hope they will remain. I do hope that MyLot does not end up the way Yuwie did.

I feel so let down too! It was such a shock! I don't think I will stay here I will just check in my email once in awhile and prey that my lot goes back to the way it was because this? This is no good at all and they are looSINg thousands of members already! If they wanted to loose so many members and shut down why did they not warn us and do so? What a big upsetting thing to happen to what I really thought was the best site in the world and would be around for a long time but I was so fooled! I say we all go!! LEAVE THEM ABANDONNED LIKE THEY DI US!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You're right. My history professor doesn't want to sign up for a facebook account because he says he doesn't know how long it will be there. Although I think it's still worth it to try fb while it's there...

truer words have never been spoken. The internet is run by profiteering gluttons nowadays, and it hit's the other members of the online community really hard.
