Are Smartphones controlling our lives?

Everyone today has a smartphone, do they control our lives? We hear disturbing news about individual who have come across some tragedy because they were on their phone. Are we that dependable on smartphones these days? Can't we live without getting on the web for one day? What do the rest of world think?

I did not see my phone yesterday, cleaned the house and soldered wires til night. I check my email this morning saying I wasn't reachable yesterday. They want to confirm if the item I ordered is correct.
