I was very saddened to read about the death of Jeanne Cooper tonight. There was much that was amazing about her and her career. It's amazing she played the same character, Katherine Chancellor, on the same show, The Young and the Restless, over four decades. It's amazing she was still acting into her 80s and doing a great job of it. It's amazing that she had three children who all became actors. She did an amazing job with her character, too. We saw Katherine Chancellor battle alcoholism, family tragedies, family secrets, and business takeovers with heart and style over the years. She was, to my mind, the most well-rounded of all the Y&R characters principally because of what Jeanne brought to the role as an actress. She had a comic timing that few, if any, of the other cast members possessed, to go along with her dramatic chops. Whereas "evil" Victor and "good" Victor seemed at times like masks that Eric Braeden would put on whenever a script demanded the appearance of one or the other, the different Katherines seemed more like sides of the same very real and very human character. Jeanne Cooper, you will be missed!

Oh no! I haven't watched Y&R in a long while, but I still consider myself a big fan. This is the first I've heard of this. Was Katherine still included in story lines recently, or has she been absent due to health?

I actually haven't watched Y&R in a while either, but because Y&R episodes are shot weeks in advance of their airing I think Katherine has still been on the show. I read something about the character undergoing brain surgery recently. My understanding is that Jeanne didn't really get sick until April.
