i mean, of course the want to break the ice but there are other ways to do that than asking where i came from, how was my childhood or how are you. 70% of the time people say they are fine because they are, 20% the say they are fine because they dont want to explain a lot to someone who wont understand or help anyway. so please world, asking someone if how they are when they look like they are fine is truly annoying. when someone cries or look sad you ask them why they are sad, do not ask if they are okay because they clearly is not okay. if the person who cries says its nothing, then for all you know its really nothing, but it most likely means they want to be alone. its like asking someone who just got hit by a car and flew trough a window if they are okay. "hey man i saw you flying trough my window and i wonder if you are okay, maybe you want a hello kitty band-aid?" or "dude you're burning, are you okay?"

I suppose it all comes from people not wanting to make assumptions. Some days, when i wake up late so don't have time to put on make up or when i do not get enough sleep, i looks as though i am either really upset, have been crying a bunch or like i am ill. I would rather have someone ask me the generic question of "are you okay?" and give me the chance to explain that i just didn't sleep well last night, instead of assuming i am upset about something. Also, asking "opening" questions such as "are you okay?" give the person the option to give or not give you details. Sometimes things are personal, and try as we might we can't always hide these personal issues from our appearance or demeanor, but it does not mean we want to share our problems openly with every person we encounter throughout the day. Though in defense of the "asker" of the question, it is considered polite...if you were openly weeping on a public street because your cat just got run over by a car, would you rather have someone ask you if you are okay? or just walk by and ignore you?
