Photographs before, during, and after war

I found a project with pictures of soldiers taken before, during, and after they'd been to war. It made me really sad to see how their faces looked, and I was surprised that I really felt like I saw a pattern. I don't want to influence people's answers, so I don't really want to state what kind of pattern I felt I saw. What do you see? I encourage you to answer before you read anyone else's comments. War is so terrible. I dream of peace and I know it's really possible. Much love.
