The cicadas are emerging by the millions on the East coast, particularly here in VA. Billions expected. It's amazing to see and hear. These particular cicadas were born 17 years ago. You can read more about them in this article from Fox News (http://www.foxnews.com/science/2013/05/16/cicadas-east-coast-march/)
They're harmless, but they are everywhere! Some people even eat them as a snack delicacy. When outside, all you hear is a chorus of the continuous buzzing of millions of these guys. It really is incredible.
Here is a photo I just took of one.
Anyone else lucky enough to be witnessing this phenomenon?

ugghh....i am not a fan of bugs, particularly ones as unattractive as cicadas.....but at the same time i almost miss the "buzzing" of them in the evenings that i used to hear consistently when i lived in the midwestern united states. don't hear them as much here in northern new england...

I agree, that they are not particularly pretty, but they only emerge every 17 years, so it really is a scientific phenomenon.
They will spend a few weeks laying eggs and then die. Then the hatched babies will burrow into the ground and we won't see the cicadas again until 2030.
