I Forget to "Like"

I keep forgetting to "Like" someone's post if I like it. 
And I only remember it when I see in my activities that "so-and-so Liked your post," but then I feel like I'm just being transparently "social" if I then go Like what I initially forgot to Like.
Oh, new myLot. You're a cruel, cruel mistress. You're giving me agita. 
But what's it all about anyway? Is there some generic algorithm which ranks posts on People or Explore based on the number of Likes? Do people with more Likes have better-rated comments ala YouTube?

I just started using MyLot again and at first I didn't even notice you were able to like a post. I am not sure what the likes are for but I will try and not forget it as well.
