Why are gas prices so high?

Is there any reason for gas prices to be so high? Why is it that gas goes down in price for several weeks and then for no apparent reason, sky rockets twenty to thirty cents. We all know there is no fuel shortage. We know the government is corrupt and will not do anything for the little people. Does the government not understand that we, the little peons of the country are the life blood of the nation. We do the work and they steal our money by way of taxes. At least they could cut us a break and lower gas prices and give us a fair chance to make a reasonable living. I still would not like being raped by taxation, but it wouldn't hurt so bad.
