Answered one yesterday and it be gone which is a real pity as it concerned the perception different people have of different aspects of Israel, the people, the culture, the way they are governed and policed and of course, Palestine.
Before replying I did some research to refresh the knowledge I already had and when I had finished my reply I was really pleased that my reply was respectful and was basically the truth with regards to the comments I made re human rights, Mossad and the Knesset.
My wife is Jewish and I checked with her before posting the suggestion that the USA and of course the UK have far too much influence on Israeli relationships with Arab States - acknowledging that some protection is very much needed from a country like Iran.
In my humble opinion, none of the last 5 Israeli leaders has actually ever convinced me that peace in the region is something Israel seeks - not least with the PLO which is of course something the whole region and I daresay the rest of the world would benefit from.
Israel holds the record for for breaking the most UN resolutions, 32 since 1968!!!
Why do our governments continue to offer support to this renegade state?
We all condemn the actions of groups like Hamas and sanctions levied on them and the like for rule and resolution breaking are considerable - we need to sanction Israel in the same way.
The very fact that we are doing nothing about this tells Israel that they can keep doing what they please and will continue to get our support.
Time to tell our respective governments to get their finger out! Or we will vote in people who will!

I'm ashamed to say I really know nothing about what is going on in the world over there. I've never kept up on current events in the US or around the world. i don't watch the news and we don't get the paper. I guess i could look things up on the net.. but I kind of live in this bubble where the air doesn't move.... I wish I could understand and know more. I cannot keep up with politics and world events. Never have been able to. I wish I knew how to keep up.

I watch a lot of American News and of course the BBC World Service.
I think if we all did we could lobby our politicians to affect a different policy when dealing with the Middle East.

@jimbo45reborn I agree Jimbo. I don't know where to start to understand what is going on. My son in law can explain it over and over and I just don't grasp it. I will start looking up news on the net.

@OreoBrownie Well just ask your local Senate Representative how much money the US gives Israel - then ask what the money is for.

I think people support Israel at least partly because they are ashamed about what happed in the holocaust. Also, the press here has a very pro-Israel spin, and any Arab group that seeks to change things in the Middle East is portrayed as "The Terrorists". My perception is that Israel is on a mission to preserve itself at all costs. They have backed themselves into a corner from which there is no easy exit. My father is Jewish, but I think what Israel is doing to the Palestinians is wrong. Until both sides can actually see each other as people, not demonize them, there will be no solution to this mess.

I think the trouble is Israel is a self governing, democraticcountry. Just like the USA and UK, it has right and left wing factions. Although some Israelites approve of a 2 state option, many don't. I also hear they are very upset at having their borders attacked and bombed; not just by Hamas but also by Syia and Egypt. It's a complex situation much wider than finance or outside influence.
