Take the money and run?

I've been emphasizing with the kids that money is tight. Maybe a little bit too much, because yesterday Cary handed me a form from the school regarding a voucher program for clothing for the children. And I went, huh? See, I make pretty decent money, almost double the 2011 median household income, and so I'm wondering why somebody thinks I need help buying clothing for my children. I'm guessing that Cary said something. Anyway, I wrote the school counselor who sent the letter, and told her I didn't really feel right about it, and her response was that it was optional, but they'd be glad to do it, and did I want to or not? So I'm torn between, geez lady I make too much money for this, and well I just paid $350 to fix a broken tooth and my bills are too high, so maybe I should just take it. Would you take the money?

Not if I didn't really need it. With the way some of the school staff members are around here, I'd be afraid to any way.

When I grew up, most of my clothes were hand-me-downs. We were--I think--middle-class, maybe lower-middle (my dad was an uncertified accountant, my mom a housewife.) This may sound like odd advice, but maybe you need to live a little bigger. Keep your budget tight, but huge ... like yoga-pants for overweight ladies
