Recon Instruments, a Vancouver based company and a Googles partner, is planning
to launch sunglasses with their own heads-on display, and these are not related to
Google Glass in any way. They are about to launch Jet, which are heads-up display
glasses with technology of their own. Their glasses have a tiny monitor, same as
Google Glass, but it is located at the bottom of the vision field for the right eye, and not
at the top. The display unit has Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity, a dual-core processor,
GPS, movement sensors as well as an HD camera and other features. The technology
enables the people wearing the Jet glasses to film and track their movements, for
instance, and to upload that on to the Web. Recon does not mind the Google Glass
resemblance at all, for they could not have dreamed of the kind of huge press coverage
Google Glass has evoked.
Recon is already in the business of selling eyewear that has heads-up display -it was
a pioneer in putting little monitors and sensors in ski goggles to show distance, speed,
vertical descent data and other things.Google had invited Recon to the I/O, same as last year, because Recon uses components from Google’s Android mobile operating system. So this year, Recon planned to demonstrate apps like video streaming, live activity tracking, smartphone
and Web connectivity, Facebook integration etc, that run on Jet. They are trying to stake
out a space for themselves, in an activity specific use for their Jet glasses. For example,
they expect cyclists to use their glasses, since it will give them data on their rides such
as distance traveled, speed, power output etc, at a single glance. They are planning
to launch one model which will come with multiple lens-colors and frames, and to start
selling them by the end of the year.
