A child on a subsidized lunch program gets to school, and is told he can't have his meal because his account is 30 cents short. The mother is called, and rushes to the school to pay the 30 cents, but finds out that the boy's lunch was thrown in the trash. Yep, you heard it here folks. A $1.25 breakfast thrown in the trash because the school couldn't wait for the boy's mother to cough up the thirty cents.
Only in America.
Barber Middle School How's this for petty? A student on the reduced meals plan at Barber Middle School in Dickinson, Texas, was 30 cents short in his meals account when he came to the cafeteria to ...

Sort of like in -DOGMA- (if it's not in that Amazon-Store now, it will be soon), where the demonized angels find that they can get back into Heaven if they cut off their wings & walk through the gate of a special church (thus proving G*d wrong and negating all of creation that ever will be, is, or was before )
Before I rehd your recap of the story, I was gonna say, 'Yep, just like you'll find the WORST sinners INSIDE the church!'

You are right, things like this must be spoken up,but the question is whom we should tell?Maybe write to the school master would take some effect,if it's a responsible school.
I can remember an episode of a classic movie 'The Shawshank Redemption',To build a library,Andy write to the state governor consecutively, until the end,he reach his goal,I think it may bring us some inspiration.

That's supposed to be illegal isn't it? At my girls school they have an "alternate lunch" (sandwich, fruit cup and milk) for students who can't pay.

Not only in America. Although it is illegal in France to refuse to give a meal to a child at school, it happens often, and I can even tell you something worst : a 5 years old girl was took out from the school canteen by the local police in a small town at the beginning of this year, because her parents had not paid for her meals .
What you are describing is really abusive, but it is significant of how our western world works : it is preferable to throw food in the trash than to feed a child that cannot pay .
The same western world gives also billions to help people in need, so you cannot condemn it completely... I only condemn its contradictions.

I'd say the western world gives more to people who don't need help thanto those who do.

I think that it is the heinous crime. The schools are opened to give the lessons of morality. If this behaviour is done with a little child, what a child will learn and what will they educate.
Thanks.

Thank you very much for a good response.

Considering we all learned Spanish in school and none of us needs or speaks it, that's even more surprising.
