Recently I was reading Sarah Waters's TIPPING THE VELVET, I have a question.
Forgive my poor English,I‘m not sure this expression is correct.
To make a long story short, what's the meaning of tomboy in Europe and the US?Is this butch or act like a boy of a girl? Or other meaning?

I had an argument with a friend about this. She kept calling herself a tomboy because she prefers to wear jeans over dresses and such. I told her a tomboy was what cupkitties has described. So she climbed a tree, and took a picture of it just so I would agree that she's a tomboy. lol

I don't know what the definition would be for Europe. In the U.S it refers to girls who prefer to do the things that society considers to be "for boys only"(ex: playing video games, climbing trees, playing baseball, digging for worms). Tomboys are often known for dressing masculine, but there are some who dress very girly and still exhibit Tomboyish traits through their actions and personality.
