No Christmas Party in Public Schools?

I received a number of complaints from parents and pupils (especially pupils!) that the city government of Quezon City has announced a "no Christmas party" policy among public schools in the said municipality.
The office of the Mayor decided to suspend celebrations among public institutions because it would seem inappropriate considering the plight of those affected by the typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan). Constituents are discouraged from spending extravagantly and to allot some of their money to a more suitable cause such as donating to our brothers in the Visayas.
This could be ideal but the children deserve to enjoy the holiday season, as most parents stated. Christmas is one thing kids always look forward to aside from birthdays so they shouldn't be deprived of the happiness this occasion brings yearly.
The parents and teachers agreed to push through with their own private parties but on a less expensive scale. The amount of the exchange gifts were adjusted and some had decided on potluck to minimize the contribution cost for parents.
It is true that we have to do our share for our brothers in Samar and Leyte but Christmas is not only about expensive gifts and parties. We can keep the spirit by being united, happy, and hopeful that the new year will bring better life and luck for all of us.
