Winter is many a child’s favorite time of the year. Even those kids that do not really enjoy the snow and cold can be surprised with a few activities, which will, perhaps, make them like the cold season more. If you are unsure about what to do with your kids this winter, here are a few ideas that might spin your brain in the right direction. Spending time outside during winter is important for kids, as it will boost their immune systems and make them more used to it. Rope Tow This is a winter version of the famous game called ‘tug-of-war’. As you may know, there are two teams, each pulling one of the ends of a rope. The point of the game is to pull the other team over the midline. The tricky part with this one is that the snow makes things more difficult for participants, as there will be a lot of sliding and falling down, but that only ensures that there is more laughter and fun. Flag in snow Trying to find a white flag in the snow sounds a bit like looking for a needle in a haystack. But it is not as impossible as it sounds. It is played by taking a white piece of cloth (we’ll call it a flag), tying it around a stick and then hiding it somewhere within the boundaries that have been set before the start of the game. Everyone else then goes out and searches for the flag. Whoever hides the flag for the longest time is the winner of the game. Hat trick Who said that the snowman’s only purpose was to stand around the front yard and look nice? While this is the basic purpose, there are many things that can be done with a well-built, plump snowman. One of the things that you can do is to play the game called “hat trick” (and yes, it does involve a hat). Once your Mr. Snowman is finished, take its top hat and try to put it on his head by throwing it from the distance of 10 feet or so. It needs to be thrown Frisbee-style or the game will be too easy. Everyone has one shot per turn and the first who land the hat on the head three times – wins. Tic-Tac-Snoe If you have siblings, this should be a very nice game for your family to play. Go outside (to your backyard, for example), and draw a large 3x3 board in the snow. Once the table has been set, use pinecones for the Os and crossed sticks for the Xs. The rules are the same as the good-old Tic-Tac-Toe. You can use the snow that is all around to keep the score. Cold Molds If you wish to teach your children that even the kitchenware (like pots and pans) can be used to have fun, then this activity is totally for you. Take various pots and pans from the kitchen and use them as molds to create various things (like crystalline castles made of snow or some ‘delicious’ pastry, also out of snow). The imagination of a child has no boundaries, so use it well to keep them occupied for a long time. Elf party I know that the holiday season has almost passed, but this trick is quite useful. You and your spouse could dress as Santa’s helpers, the elves, and ask your kids to come and help them either prepare some presents or decorate the Christmas tree outside the house. Along the way, there’s time to do many other things and spend quality time with the children. The benefit is, of course, that the tree will be decorated in no time. Kids absolutely adore snow. Everything about it is fun when you are a kid who has yet to enter school. The imagination of the kids is really great and playing in the snow and thinking of various ways to spend time outside during the snowing season will greatly benefit the young minds of the children. So, as soon as the white cover falls on your time, take your children out and enjoy the seasonal fun. Additional resource for more fun: www.costumecollection.com.au
