We Filipinos have this weird belief that has stayed with our tradition after hundreds of years. It is called "usog" or in English, Evil eye hex.
For example, I just came from work, tired, hungry, and the weather was hot , and then i bumped into someone on the street, and I said, "Hello, you're looking good today!"
That person would automatically say, "Pwera usog!" (Hex,begone!)
A person hexed usually suffers from vomiting, severe stomachache, and sometimes extreme weakening. The person responsible is then called and will lick his/her fingertips then touch the afflicted person's stomach.
Others consider this practice as mere superstition but some research has come up with a possible explanation to this belief.
A tired person drained of energy has the capability to "borrow" energy from another person.the loss of energy from the affected person results in minor discomforts and illness. The saliva wiped on the stomach may contain opiorphin which is a pain-killing substance.
So next time, don't be too skeptic with what our elders believe. It may have a scientific explanation that we are not aware of. "PWERA USOG!"
