Is there any difference between the development technique of generic and custom? What are they mainly used for?

The main difference is like generic software is made for general purpose and the custom software which is used for any particular client or people. Where the generic software development is little bit tough when compared to the custom software development. Why it is so means it needs some skills not in mean of the analytical skills but in the design and marketing.
