I did not know anything about Dyslexia until I met Samantha. Her mother pulled her out of a regular school because it wasn't helping her. Worse, her self-esteem was in an all time low. She was later assessed as someone with Dyslexia.
Sam's mom, Yla, came to me and asked me if I could help her . I was hesitant at first but I can't say no to Yla who's a long-time friend.
Anyway, not knowing what I'm getting myself into, I plunged ahead and I boy , I never expected r a wonderful learning experience I would be sharing with Sam.
She may have difficulty reading and spelling words but how her mind works is simply amazing!
I can't go into all the details but I remember how she told me how the books got their color. I worked for a printing company so I knew but I was totally dumbfounded when she explained the whole process. How everything was just blue, red and yellow combined (from the primary colors).
She even asked me questions that left me groping for answers. For instance she asked, "If the tree in the garden of Eden was forbidden, why did God have to put it there in the first place?" ; " Were there dinosaurs in Noah's Ark? If there were, how did they manage to lead them there?"
She even explained aerodynamics to her elder sister who's in 8th grade while Sam is only in 3rd grade. She can't solve mathematical problems on paper but she knew the answers just by looking at them.
I know that some parents are bothered when their children show slow progress in school, but let this not be our gauge in measuring a child's intelligence.
Some of the most famous people in our history were burdened by learning difficulties yet, they were able to prove themselves smarter than the average human.

Dyslexia is not a disease, my friend. It is a condition some people possess and we have to learn to adjust and accept it. It's like being left-handed.
