The Survival of the Fittest

As a nurse to a public hospital on a third world country, I am used to seeing people who puts their health last of their priorities. They can't even afford to think about their health unless they're already sick which is always too late for them cause they wouldn't even have the money to buy their medicines or whatever therapy they'll be needing. Most of them dies because they don't have money and they know they just have to suck it all up cause that's life. They're probably used to it too. They said there's a lot of things money can't buy. But money can buy health. Money can help relieved pain and keep them comfortable and warm on their sick beds. Money can pay your operations and provide you medicines. Money can buy you a life. A second life. When it comes to health, money is always an issue.
I had once encounter a little boy who died from an asthma attack. His only 2 years old. His father took him in our hospital way too late. His already dead on arrival. We tried to revive him for more than thirty minutes but his already long gone. He died cause his family don't have the money to buy him the medications he needed. His father was the one who took him cause his mother was busy nursing his couple of months old sibling. A young life was put to waste. That thin line between life and death. It was a devastating scene to see. I was devastated.
That was when I realize that people like them fight every day with every minute of their life to live. It's the survival of the fittest for them. If you were born weak you'll die. And if you survive you'll come out strong but different and exhausted. In the hospital, I see people fight for their lives. I see them held onto it as long as they could hoping someone would arrive and help them.Hoping that the government could provide them the health assistance they need. They get angry at us and yell at us cause they don't have anything but their emotions. I can only see fear. But what melts my heart are those people who has this hope in their eyes. Hope that maybe we can help them.Maybe our government could help them. But they all die in vain. Maybe I'll die in vain too, hoping to see our government do something about it.
