why would a guy lie about having sex?

There's this guy in my class (we are 17) who's spreading rumors about us having sex and now everyone is calling me a s.lut and home wrecker cause he's in a relationship with a cheerleader. Like I don't even get his logic because he's had this girlfriend for almost a year its not like he is single? Who lies about cheating on their gf? Why would he do this to me I'm not mean to him at all! I don't even really know him to be honest. We barely ever talk. And He's really popular so now everyone knows but it's not true. Plus he has never said that he had sex with another girl so why is he targeting me? :(
