Being a responsible pet owner means you not only provide your pet with love, food and shelter, but also medical care as needed. Medical care from Edmond veterinarians for pets will include routine checkups for preventative care, vaccinations and sickness visits. Start-Up A new pet should be make its initial visit to the vet soon after adoption or birth for a 'meet-and-greet' visit. This will make going to the vet much easier during the lifetime of the pet. If a pet receives an injection, oral medication or nail clippings each time a visit is made, the pet will grow to hate the vet and rebel when it’s time to go. The meet-and-greet should be done on a slow day at your vet’s office and when your pet is not sick. Allow your pet to become familiar with the office, staff and vet and take along a pet treat so your pet will associate the vet’s office with something good. First Visit Schedule the next vet visit while you’re there on the meet-and-greet. The first visit should be made as soon as possible after adopting an adult pet or at 4-6 weeks after birth and involve a head-to-tail checkup and required shots. Subsequent Vet Visits Well-care visits for pets should be scheduled much like that of a healthy adult person - every 6-12 months. Well-care visits will allow the vet to exam your pet when nothing is wrong with him or her and get to know your pet. This will also help the vet find any abnormality early and begin any treatment deemed necessary for your pet. Your vet is also there to give you advice on what to feed your pet, keep pet updated with needed shots and to attend to grooming needs, like nail trimming. Emergency Care Any time your pet shows signs of distress, with or without a known trauma occurrence, take him or her to the vet quickly for an exam. Vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, loss of appetitive or injury all warrant an emergency trip to the veterinarian’s office. Keep a list of emergency contact numbers on hand for poison control and after-hours emergency vet care just in case the unthinkable happens to your pet at night or on a weekend.
