"the global community shares a common life source: Blood. It is the life force in all human beings, regardless of colour, race or religion. What Are Hemoglobin-Based Oxygen Carriers? This question is very important to every one that has life within him or her. Why, within each red blood cell are some 300 million hemoglobin molecules. When talking about a mature red cell, we found out that hemoglobin represents about one third of it. Each molecule contains the protein globin and a pigment called heme- which includes an iron atom. That is why, when a red cell of blood passes through the lungs, oxygen molecules now at that moment penetrate the cell and attach themselves to hemoglobin molecules. Seconds later, the oxygen is discharged into the body tissue, sustaining the life of the cells. Some manufacturers now process hemoglobin, then they release it from human or bovin red blood cells. The extracted hemoglobin is then filtered to remove impurities, chemically modified and purified, mix it with a solution, and lastly doing the packaging At this stage, we have what brought us to the topic above: hemoglobin- based oxygen carrier, or abbreviated HBOC. Since the heme is responsible for the rich red colour of blood, a unit of HBOC looks like a unit of red blood cells, and this is the primary component from which it is taken. Moreover, unlike red blood cells which must be refrigerated and discarded after few weeks, the HBOC, can be stored at a room temperature and used month later. It may interest you to note, that since the cells membrane with its unique antigens is gone, severe reactions due to mismatched blood types pose no threat. So those considering the use of hemoglobin should think and weigh the matter carefully because of its challenges.. 1. The HBOC carries out the key function of the primary component of blood, the red cells. 2. Hemoglobin, from which HBOC is derived, makes up a significant portion of that component. Conclusively, Blood is essential to all human life. It is a precious resource, handle it utmost care. by T.Moses
