Yeah I agree with cupkitties. If it is a large scale business, people may may know about it by different means. But if it is a medium-sized or small-sized one, there is very less chance for people to know about it. In such cases, a sign board can help. It worth a lot for your company. Haven't you heard of signs that made multi-million dollar companies?
And haven't you seen the 'Welcome to Las Vegas' sign? It worth a lot to Las Vegas. It is really an eye-catching one. There are many sign design companies out there who create a custom sign for businesses. Pride Signs at Cambridge, Ontario is the one which I know.
