What leads to success?”

1 Discussion thread: “What leads to success?” On the basis of his interview with 500 successful people, Richard St. talks about 8 secrets of success – one of them is PASSION. See the following talk. Our question was: What is a contributor's interpretation of being "passionate about one's work"? How does it lead to success? A contributor engages deeply with not only the work that he likes but with ANY work s/he takes up. Very often most of us, before even engaging with the work, say , "I like this / I don't like this", little realizing that as one engages with the work, one starts seeing new dimensions to the same thing... these, in turn, take us deeper into the very thing which we earlier had categorized as "I don't like". Usually the "I don't like" factor arises because we find certain things hard and we are reluctant to struggle through the initial period... However, if one struggles through the initial phase, then the very thing which we found difficult / boring becomes interesting. That is one aspect to the entire thing. © JULY 2012; CAREER KNOWLEDGE RESOURCES PVT. LTD. 2 Also it is important to realize that when we join organizations, we will be expected to do many things which we do not like (even the CEO of the company does not always get to do things which s/he likes, in fact s/he rarely gets to do so), yet we need to do these things with as much excellence and passion as those things which we like. The question is, how can we do this? This becomes possible only when we see the purpose towards which we are working. Once we do this, the smaller “irritants” do not matter. E. g. as a teacher, if I see my purpose as building students, then even if I do not like supervision duty (or for that matter, checking papers) I will still do it with as much care as I would take in doing the work I like, because I recognize that ultimately it is all adding up to the final purpose of “building students”. So one lets go of personal likes and dislikes and embraces the “purpose” of being a teacher.

Who ever Richard St is? I agree with him. And I agree with you that passion does not rely on like but that even dislike can be dealt with if we understand the reason for doing. Good ideas. :-)

To dance is not an art, but to make others dance is an art. Thanks.

To follow in a few programs in prize money, of course it takes perseverance and skill for success.
