Getting a perfect cup of coffee starts with the roasting process. Roasting has to be done correctly in order for the coffee to taste its best. Roasting coffee requires starting with the fresh coffee bean.
The coffee bean is cleaned to remove any dirt or debris from it. The beans are also examined to make sure they are in perfect conditions. Any wrinkles beans are discarded. Up to two ounces of coffee beans can be roasted at a time. The coffee beans are put in a roasting pan to start the process. A person must stir the beans so they do not burn or stick to the pan. The beans are almost ready to move onto the next step when they stop popping own their own.
They will make a sound similar to the sound of popcorn that is popping. They will also turn light brown in color. The beans will also start to separate from their skin. This usually takes around ten minutes to start happening but times may vary slightly. A person can also tell that the beans are almost ready when they start to crack. Within 15 to 30 seconds the beans will show their second visible crack. Different people like different roasting levels but this is the typical roasting that most people like. The average roasting time for fresh coffee beans is 8 to 12 minutes. There are various temperatures the beans can be roasted at to give them a stronger flavor.
Once the beans are done in the roast pan they need to be cooled off. It is best to lay them in a flat container and allow them to fully cool. The coffee beans and then ground up and coffee can be made. Any beans that are not used during this time can be stored in an airtight container and be used at a later time. Roasted coffee beans cannot be refrigerated, as this area is too damp for the beans. The beans should be kept out of the sunlight in order to retain their full flavor. These freshly roasted beans are usually fresh for about two weeks.
