You might be wondering why it is important to have dogs spayed and neutered. Each year over 6-8 million animals are placed in animal shelters according to the Humane Society. While half of the animals are thankfully adopted, sadly, the other half have to be euthanized. That means approximately 3-4 million dogs are put down or killed every year. Tragically, many of those dogs could have been wonderful, healthy pets that could have been nice companions. Surprisingly, 30% of those animals are purebred dogs. These numbers are what make animal advocates constantly emphasize the critical importance of having a dog spayed or neutered. Animals end up at shelters for many different reasons. However, millions of shelter dogs have been abandoned or have owners that are unable to take care of them anymore. Spaying or neutering your dog can help prevent the tragedy of having to euthanize a perfectly healthy pet. There are other benefits to spaying or neutering your dog. Spayed or neutered dogs are not as likely to bite, scratch, roam or fight. By nature, male dogs are territorial. If he is not neutered he will constantly try to show dominance over other dogs especially when a female dog is around. For female doges it will stop the heat cycle, which will stop bleeding, licking, flagging and producing pheromones that attract male dogs. Ultimately, it prevents dogs from looking for another dog to mate with. Additionally, they will also avoid being susceptible to mammary, testicular or uterine cancer. As reported by the Humane Society, there was a female dog that actually gave birth to hundreds of puppies in only six years. If everyone had their dog neutered or spayed it would dramatically decrease the number of homeless, attacks on pets or people, and shelter dogs. In some cities, a spaying and neutering program has helped the euthanasia rate lower about 30-60%. This is definitely a step in the right direction. But people need to remain responsible nationwide and continue to spay and neuter dogs as well as adopt them. So take time to search the internet or ask around to find an Edmond OK veterinarian who is able to spay or neuter your pet.
