What is an obd2 scanner?
An obd2 scanner is an electronic tool that mechanics use it to evaluate problems with automobiles. More and more often these days, one of the most important pieces of a car is a computer. Whether it's a solenoid chip, or an on-board computer system, an scanning tool's job is to interface with the electronics and to figure out just what the difficulties with the car is. However, in order to be prepared for all possible situations, a variety of obd2 scanning tools should be kept on hand, since not every tool can do every job for every different car.
How to operate?
The basic purpose of a code reader is to interpret and understand the signals and codes listed in the on-board computer system. An scanning tool, regardless of its size, is connected directly to the vehicle's electrical system. The scanning tool then accesses the computer and runs all of the diagnostic programs it can, collecting and extracting the codes in the computer. Running the diagnostic programs will tell the scanning tool if there are any errors in the car's electrical system (sometimes going as far as testing the anti-lock brakes and air bags). If there are any other errors that the computer has detected, they will be listed as a code, and that code will be downloaded to the scanning tool, so that the operator can view them.
How to select?
Depending on the needs of the mechanic, they may have one, or a variety of scanning tools. Often times a single car brand has its own variety of codes and passwords, which will require a particular tool to access. This is also true for cars that are manufactured in other countries, such as Europe and England. There will be additional programs, or in some cases hardware, that is required in these circumstances. While all obd2 scanning tools are connected and operate under the same basic ideas, it's impossible to get a single scanning tool that can work with all vehicles, and diagnose all problems. So, for most mechanics, a variety of scanning tools will be necessary. For example, FVDI Renault, it can diagnose many kinds of cars.
