When it comes to owning an animal, you must be prepared to take care of the animal properly to ensure a healthy, long life. When it comes to owning a dog, many people are under the assumption that dogs are able to eat human food. This isn’t the case, however, as human food can actually have a negative effect on your dog and cause them some serious health problems.
One food that everyone should know is harmful to dogs is chocolate, dark chocolate in particular. Chocolate contains methylxanthines, which are found in cacao seeds. If your dog gets a hold of chocolate, it can cause your dog to vomit, have diarrhea, pant, cause extreme thirst and urination, and abnormal heartbeat. It can also cause your dog to have a seizure and in more extreme cases can cause death.
Another biggie that everyone should know to avoid is giving your pet alcohol. Alcohol in animals can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and decreased coordination. It could also affect your dog’s breathing, can cause depression, and even lead to death. In other cases, it can even cause your dog to go into a coma.
Some vegetables and herbs, such as onions, garlic, and chives, can cause your dog to have gastrointestinal irritation. These foods can also lead to red blood cell damage. Dogs are at risk when consuming these vegetables if they’ve eaten a large quantity of it as they’re toxic. On the other hand, some fruits are also harmful to your dog. Grapes and raisins can actually cause kidney failure in your dog, and if your dog already has health problems, this can only make it more severe.
Milk and other milk-based products is another big no-no as animals don’t process large amounts of lactase. If you give your dog these milk-based products, it can cause diarrhea or other digestive upsets.
Macadamia nuts are another food to avoid giving to your dog. Nuts have a tendency to cause weakness, vomiting, depression, and hyperthermia in dogs. Within twelve hours of your dog eating macadamia nuts, you’ll begin to notice these signs which can last up to two full days.
Next time you’re thinking about feeding your dog human food, think again. It’s much more harmful to your dog, so stick to giving them only dog food instead. And make sure to ask a veterinarian before you serve your dog some food, if you’re in doubt -
