Croatia is currently one of the premium summer vacation destinations in Europe. Every summer, millions of vacationers on personal, group, romantic and even corporate vacations flock the Adriatic country to have a moment of their lives. Croatia is endowed with breathtaking beauty, rich history, sumptuous delicacies, a vibrant nightlife and a wealth of tourist facilities. Basically, whatever the type of vacation one intends to have, there are more than enough attractions to satisfy their needs. Some of the most popular destinations for summer vacationers are the following:
Dubrovnik
Better known by its nickname “the Pearl of the Adriatic”, Dubrovnik is by far Croatia’s most popular summer destination. This medieval city boasts of a natural charm which is almost indescribable. It is surrounded by emerald-blue waters, breathtaking landscapes, and colorful coral reefs. The city itself has cobbled streets, a 500 year-old wall, numerous architectural masterpieces and a host of historical treasures. One such a treasure is a pharmacy which has been in operation for 700 years. Others include medieval cathedrals, monasteries and monuments. Dubrovnik also has numerous beaches as well as spots for swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving. There are numerous eateries which serve sumptuous delicacies and delightful wines (the city has close to 100 local wine varieties). In the summer, the city hosts the annual Dubrovnik Summer Festival. This 43-day event features classical music, opera, theatre and dance. Basically, Dubrovnik offers everything from fun and adventure to luxury, romance and lots of epicurean delights.
Zadar
Zadar is perhaps best known for its sunset, famously described as “the most beautiful sunset in the world.” However, this 3000 year-old city has numerous other attractions to offer would-be vacationers. It has a wealth of historical treasures including a Roman Forum built in the 3rd Century by Caesar Augustus and 34 churches built between the 13th and 16th Centuries. The churches feature distinct architectural styles, colorful frescoes, picturesque sculptures and interesting legends. One of Zadar’s iconic attractions is the world-famous Sea Organ. This is the only organ of its kind which is played by the sea. Another top attraction is Greeting to the Sun. Popularly described as “the greatest light show on earth”, this fusion of artistry and tech captures solar energy using solar panels and transforms it into a spectacular light display at night. Zadar also has numerous beaches, a lovely harbor and easy access to top national parks like Konarti, Krka and Paklencia.
Plitvice Lakes
Fondly referred to as “Heaven on Earth”, the Plitvice Lakes are a natural wonder with no peer anywhere in the world. The 16 cascading lakes are unique, spectacular and breathtaking to watch. The way their waters cascade is truly magical. What adds to their magnificent beauty is the fact that the color of the water changes throughout the day. They range from green, blue, gray or azure, depending on the direction of sunlight and composition of minerals. The lakes also form part of the Plitvice Lakes National Park. This park boasts of spectacular waterfalls, unique rock formations and rare species (35 mammal, 222 bird, 84 plant and 18 fish species). Its main attractions include the lynx, wild cat, brown bear, owl, capercaillie and eagle. Visitors to the park can enjoy nature walks, boat rides, picnics, bird watching and camping.
The Islands
There are up to 1,267 islands in Croatia, some of which are the most beautiful in the Adriatic. As such, anyone who desires an island summer vacation is basically spoilt for choice. Croatia’s islands have hosted adventurers, couples, epicureans and explorers for centuries. Each island has something unique to offer. Brac, for instance is the top destination for people who delight in water sports such as windsurfing, parasailing, wakeboarding, scuba diving and water skiing. Pag is the top destination for those who want to party. Its beaches like Papaya and Aquarius host trans-day and trans-night beach parties all summer long. Rab is the top destination for those who prefer to sunbathe and swim totally nude. Korcula is the place for those who desire to enjoy pure unadulterated nature. The sheer variety of islands is endless. The best way to enjoy the island delights is to charter a boat and go exploring. There are numerous companies which offer boat or yacht hire services at very affordable rates.
Those are a few of the popular destinations for summer vacationers in Croatia. Others include the capital - Zagreb, the popular city – Split and the region of Istria. In these destinations, one can find the vacation experiences they have always dreamed about. It is important to remember that the Croatian summer runs from mid-May to late October, with the tourist season peaking in July and August. Those who prefer to avoid the peak season crowds can travel in either May-June or Sept-Oct. Those who prefer to enjoy the full flare of the tourist season can visit in July and August. Whenever one chooses to visit, they will ultimately enjoy the vacation of their lives.
