Among the health problems associated with obesity can include heart failure secondary to increased myocardial work 4 and left ventricular dysfunction 5,6 , hypertension 7-9 , diabetes 10,11 , kidney disease 12 , gallbladder disease 13 , 14 , respiratory dysfunctions 15 , joint diseases and gout 16 , endometrial cancer 17 , abnormal rates of lipids and lipoproteins 18.19 , problems in the administration of anesthetics during surgery 20 and reduced functional capacity 21 . Consequently, the weight reduction is often recommended by doctors for medical reasons. Moreover, there are a large number of individuals who are in weight reduction programs for aesthetic reasons. It is estimated that between 60 and 70 million adults and at least 10 million American teens are overweight 21 . Millions of Americans have participated in unsupervised programs for weight reduction; for this reason, it is the opinion of the American College of Sports Medicine guidelines that are necessary to ensure that such programs are secure and efficient.
