I had been exercised less in the past. My health was not good always. Once in a medical examination, I found that I had a low bone mineral density and also my heart didn’t function very well. So, a friend of mine introduced tai chi chuan to me. In the beginning, I just watched a senior practice tai chi chuan in a park. I thought that he did it really very well in that the moves were very difficult to display. Afterwards, I had a Sifu. After some train with my Sifu, I found that something was wrong in my understanding of tai chi chuan. In fact, the real tai chi chuan is more simple than showy. It doesn’t emphasize the beauty of the body. My sifu has been practicing martial arts for over 30 years. In the beginning, he practiced external kungfu. So for tai chi chuan, firstly he touched the North Wu style tai chi chuan. After many years later, he began to learn the South Wu style tai chi chuan at Wu’s Tai Chi Chuan Academy in Shanghai. I think that the real tai chi chuan isn’t the one that people practice in the park, which is just martial dance. Push hands also doesn’t only means the counter between forces. Even though there are many people practicing tai chi chuan in China, the real tai chi chuan is at verge of endangering. So how about the teaching of tai chi chuan in the United States? It conforms to the principles of real tai chi chuan? I think the promotion of tai chi chuan doesn’t perform well. What’s the reason? I think that when people teach tai chi chuan to others, the philosophy and principles are displayed so abstractly, mysteriously and obscurely that the learners can’t comprehend the essence of tai chi chuan truly. So I advocate teaching and exchanging tai chi chuan in much plain language. If somebody loves tai chi chuan and will come to China for a visit, I will be very glad to discuss and exchange about tai chi chuan with him. I will also introduce you guys to my Sifu.
