I'm an epileptic too so I've had had several EEGs over the years. The ones I always hated was when they you to go to sleep so they could monitor your brainwaves while you slept.

My daughter is scheduled for one tomorrow afternoon. She had a grand mal seizure while visiting her father two months ago. She has not had a problem since then but they still want to do this test. They did a ct scan when they took her to the hospital two months ago and found nothing abnormal.

oh yeah i hated when he had to have the sleep deprived ones, it was before he was diagnosed with the adhd, and they always use to tell me hes not sleep deprived because of how out of control he was.

I've had 2 versions. The one version just my head was hooked up and then the stims were sent via the fingertips I think. That was for my MS. Then for the nerve damange in my back from the cancer I had one and that one was hell. It truly was so bad that I commented that I'd love to get my ex in for one of these! LOL It was like a torture technique as they put volts into you in different places and some were pretty intense. It was over fairly quickly but it wasn't pleasant to experience while it was happening. The good part was the minute they ended the volts it was completely over and no side effects, etc. So while it sort of is harsh and hurts to the bone like a toothache when happening, it's not something that remains a bad feeling.
I hope his will only be the one with the head and finger tips. That one was nothing really. The other one was horrible.
Good luck!

Yes, I used to have to have them every 6 months. I also had the sleep deprived eegs. I haven't had one in over 10 yrs. The eegs could not reveal what was causing my seizures. So, after several years the doctor said no point in doing it anymore.

I used to have to have them on a regular basis. Mine were "sleep-deprived" though. I'd have to stay up all night long on the night before because they wanted to get a reading while I was awake and then while I was sleeping. By making me stay up the entire night before, it ensured that I would be sleepy enough to fall right out when I closed my eyes once I was hooked up to their monitoring equipment.
Unfortunately, the EEG never really did give them much information to go on. My neuro preferred MRIs for more concrete information.

I have had one, shortly after I was diagnosed in 2001. It wasn't an all-nighter, but still, it was uncomfortable and I didn't like it.

That is where they attach a bunch of wires to your head right?
I have had it done a couple of times. And they put this flashing strobe in front of my face even though I could keep my eyes closed when they did it, it drove me insane!!! I am sure they saw that one the brain wave thing. LOL
Oh! And I must say, if you have long hair...when they take those wires out, it hurt like heck! (Not my choice of perfect word.) This one lady even did the bandaid methog. Grab all the wires at once and yanked. I swear I had some little bald spots on my head after that!!! LOL

I have had one many years ago. I had no idea why I was having this when they gave it to me. They did an EKG first then they said they needed to do an EEG. I think it was because I had a numb spot in my head and my heart was fluttering and they were trying to find out if it was a heart or head problem. Anyway they found nothing from either one. I still have the numb spot some times.

i would like to suggest yoga / breathing exercises as an alternative therapy. i am sure this will of positive help as i see that it has helped my wife a lot - she is (was) epileptic but it has come down to a 'great' extent now, thanks to yoga and meditational practices. good luck to you. and yes we both have taken EEG's a couple of times.

Yes, I have had a few over the years. My first in my teens and a few in my adult life, because of my psychological history some of my doctors want to make sure that there aren't any lesions, tumors or such that may have been causing my problems. Also when I recently had my sleep study done they monitored an eeg throughout the night - it doesn't hurt but can be "sticky" they stick the electrodes on different areas of your head -- My hair is very long, below my waist line and it took a lot warm water and scrubbing to get all that sticky stuff out. I'm sure for someone with epilepsy that it is necessary to have EEG's on a regular basis. I hope that all has been going well for you and your son. Best Wishes :)

I had my first EEG when I was 15 when I was experiencing Migraines. During that EEG, is when they diagnosed me with Epilepsy as I experienced a Grand Mall seizure, 2 of them to be exact. The doctors don't do these EEG's on me very often anymore as everytime they do I go into a seizure.
