In 1995, Hollywood released a film named "Outbreak", about medical disaster. In this film the virus was named Motaba and it was shown that how the virus originated from Republic of Kongo and reached up to California in US. At the time when the said movie was doing good business at Box Office, Kongo was struck with Ebola virus. Now, ten years after the release of the film, West Africa is fighting against the attack of Ebola. However, it has not affected the US till now.
Negeria and Senegal have done appreciably to check it from spreading among its populations.
It was in March'2014, when WHO first declared the outbreak of Ebola in a small town of South Africa. After that it made its presence felt in Liberia, Siera Leon, Nigeria and Senegal. WHO declared Ebole as an International Public Health Emergency. Today there is fear among countries, which are geographically situated far from Wesh Africa.
Nigeria and Senegal, which are neighbourer of Ebola affected Wesh Africa, were declared Ebola free by WHO in August'2014, because of good work by these countries to contain the spread of the deseas.
The success of these two countries in combatting Ebola is of great importance. Scientists still have not been able to produce the vaccines for it. They are not sure as to how it attacks human being. Even the doctors and nurses, attending the patients are required to take utmost care to save themselves from the virus.
Nigeria with a population of 170 million and Senegal with 10.96 million, have a high density of population. In such a densly populated countries, it was a huge challange to detect ebola patient and remove them away from other, during their treatment.
Considering the speed with which this virus spread, combatting and controlling its spread, was no less than a war for these countries. It is commendable that both these nations took steps on war footings. They stopped their people from travelling to Ebola affected countries by cutting off land, sea and airial root temporarily. In addition, they put in place, medical check-up facilities to all the entry points.
They formed Incident Management System to co-ordinate at international as well as upto village lavel. Under this system officials from village level could exchange information with international agencies engaged in this excercise. The movement of affected people were closely monitored. Any person, found to have ebola sympoms, were immediately separated from others and put under proper treatment. Apart from this, adequate awareness programms about Ebole were launched through TV, Radio and Social Media. Country like India should take a lession from this.
