Before embarking on the path of meditation, it is important for the seeker to ponder over the nature of mind. Awareness of the nature of mind helps in making it calm and peaceful. Meditation comes easily to one who has true knowledge of mind. The life giving force makes the mind move and it is the movement of mind that brings into being wonderful universe. The creation of universe is due to the movement of mind. Like a dream generating another dream in it, the mind brings into being that which is non-existence. A typical feature of mind is that it is ever fluctuating and keeps moving from one object to the other at rapid speed. The mind borrows it's light and intelligence from it's source Pure Consciousness. That is why, it is often compared to a monkey that keeps jumping from one branch of tree to another. The mind is constantly drawn towards objects and creates countless world according to its own thoughts. The main reason why our mind is restless is that it is under constant sway of three qualities, namely, Purity, Passion and Darkness. If purity dominates the mind, the seeker enters into a meditative mood spontaneously. If darkness dominates the mind, it loses the power of discrimination. If Passion dominates the mind, it hankers after power, position and prestige and becomes overambitious. It is important for seeker to remember that Purity can not exist in isolation, it is always mixed with Passion and Darkness. In order therefore, to be successful in meditation, the seeker should endeavor to increase the purity i.e. love, mercy, forgiveness by taking recourse to light, pure food and company of wise people. Further, the purpose of meditation is not to fight with the mind and eradicate thoughts by force. One has to witness the mind from a distance. If we meditate with this awareness, our mind will become calm very soon and it can be given new inward direction. It requires constant practice for some time before one can attain higher degree of Meditation.
