Will usb to hdmi converter work for my laptop ?

My laptop does not have an HDMI port and I want to watch audio and video stuff from my laptop to HDMI enabled TV. I see lot of mini usb to hdmi converter but not many from regular USB to HDMI Converters. I see there are some available but I am concerned if it will work for both audio and video. Surely,For hdmi converter product.I also know some information. it only works with the video signal not the sound, My friends tell me will need a separate cable from my laptops sound card output to the tv to get sound.
