Shooting people who are caught up in the moment of living their lives provides you with the opportunity to capture raw human emotion on film, and the results can be amazing. However, there is a significant difference between capturing people on film and taking images of nature scenes. As you prepare to make this transition to street photography, consider some of these tips. Choose the Right Lens First, take time to consider the right lens to use with your shots. You may be inclined to use a zoom lens when working with street photography, and this may be a faster and easier option. However, the results will not be the same as if you take time to select the right lens for the shot. Wide angle lenses are less noticeable than a large zoom lens, so you may be able to capture more natural shots of your subjects. In addition, the result of the wide angle lens will give you a beneficial perspective and that minimizes the need to point your camera directly at the subject. Consider Your Distance In addition, you should consider the distance you stand from your subject. The detail of a close-up shot of a person on a city street can make or break the image, so do not be afraid to get up close to your subject. When you use a wide angle lens up close, your subjects may not feel as though they are the subject of your picture. Other amazing images, however, are those that are not planned. They are authentic, real and completely unexpected. Pay Attention to Your Work A person on a busy street with a camera is bound to get some attention from passersby. Others may wonder why you are taking pictures or what you are focusing your lens on. Some may simply look at you as they walk by, and others may pause to watch you for a moment. Avoid paying attention to them. It is impossible to take pictures on a busy street and not get attention from others, so simply be aware that this is normal. Go about your own activities without noticing them. Talk to Your Subjects In many cases, your street photography sessions will be candid, and you will not communicate with your subjects. However, if you notice someone who looks interesting or unique, you may consider asking their permission to take a photo. Some may continue to go about their day while you watch them for a moment, and others may smile or pose in a unique way for you. Be Courtesy You will see many different people on the streets. They may be business professionals, couples fighting, kids crying because their ice cream scoop fell off the cone or homeless people who have a hopeless look on their face. Remember to respect each of your subjects fully. You may capture different images for artistic purposes or even to raise awareness for certain causes. However, be mindful about the message that your image will convey and if that person may mind their picture being taken in their current state. Street photography is a type of photography that many people love, but it is not for everyone. You can easily attempt to make this transition by focusing on these points. After you have experienced it a few times, you may fall in love with the experience as well as the amazing images that you can capture with your efforts.
